About MainWP Dashboard Lock Extension
One door opens up every one of your clients' sites
Managing many sites from a single dashboard is convenient, but it also concentrates risk: anyone who reaches the login of your MainWP Dashboard gets close to everything you manage.
MainWP Dashboard Lock Extension takes care of that door. It restricts who can reach wp-admin and wp-login.php on your dashboard and redirects attempts to reach pages that aren't wp-admin, all without editing the .htaccess file by hand.
IP blocking on wp-admin and wp-login.php
The core feature is limiting access to wp-admin and wp-login.php to the IP addresses you specify. Anyone coming in from another address doesn't reach your dashboard's access point.
- You add the addresses one at a time, which is handy if you need to log in from several locations.
- There is no limit on addresses, so you can authorize your whole team, wherever they are.
- You don't need to configure the .htaccess file.
A 301 redirect so the dashboard goes unnoticed
Any attempt to access pages that aren't wp-admin is redirected. The result is that your dashboard stays safe from unauthorized views.
This is a discretion measure, not a replacement for IP blocking.
A second username and password for those who change IP
IP blocking has an obvious weak spot: if your address changes often, keeping the list up to date becomes a chore. For that case, the extension lets you add a second username and password to the wp-admin and wp-login.php pages. It's an extra layer of protection that doesn't depend on your IP being fixed.
When it makes the most sense
If you always work from stable addresses, the IP list is enough. If you move around or your connection rotates addresses, this second login is what keeps you from getting locked out.
It only closes the dashboard's door: the rest of the security is up to you
Dashboard Lock Extension integrates with MainWP Dashboard and needs no additional plugins or APIs. But its scope is specific, and it's worth being clear about it:
- Already solved: IP restriction of wp-admin and wp-login.php, a 301 redirect for pages that aren't wp-admin, and a second username and password.
- You cover it: keeping the list of authorized IPs up to date when one changes.
- You cover it with another tool: any protection beyond access to your dashboard's wp-admin and wp-login.php, such as a firewall or malware scanning.
- You cover it with your own judgment: choosing strong passwords, including for that second login.
What if I get locked out of my own dashboard?
Does it need other plugins or APIs?
No. It integrates directly with your MainWP Dashboard installation.
Is there a maximum number of authorized IP addresses?
There is no limit. You can add as many as you need, one at a time.
What do I do if my IP changes often?
That's what the second username and password on wp-admin and wp-login.php are for: you add that extra layer without relying on a fixed address.
How do I avoid locking myself out?
Blocking is based on the authorized addresses, so add every IP you work from before turning it on.
