About MB Custom Table
When every order means 40 rows in the database
A site with custom fields feels light at first. But WordPress stores each field as a loose row with four columns, and as the data grows, the number of rows shoots up. An example: a flower shop on WooCommerce receiving 20 orders a day, with more than 40 fields per order, adds up to about 24,000 rows in a month for just 600 orders. MB Custom Table changes that split: it saves all the fields of a record in a single row, and each field becomes a column.
Whoever installs MB Custom Table usually already suffers from the queries
This plugin is not for someone with a small site and four fields. It makes sense when you work with Meta Box and your site piles up many records with many fields: orders, listings, bookings managed with your own fields. At first, the problem does not show in the dashboard: it appears as the data grows, in heavier queries and awkward exports. Moving data to a table of its own is a structural decision that is best made early.
One row per record: what changes in practice
- Smaller database: fewer rows for the same information.
- Simpler queries: all the fields of a record sit in the same row.
- Direct reading: with any database management tool you see the whole record at once.
- Easy export: you export a single table instead of joining the metadata table with others.
It works with your current meta boxes
You define the table structure with a simple syntax and you do not have to rewrite the definition of your meta boxes. It supports all Meta Box field types and several meta types: post, user, term and comment. The table is created with the method WordPress recommends, so you can change its structure later.
Custom models: not even the post row is left
Even if you save the fields in your own table, with a custom post type there is still a row in the WordPress posts table. Custom models solve that: you define all the fields and they are saved in one single table, without going through the posts table. You can see the list of items, edit them or delete them. It combines with MB Admin Columns to choose which columns appear in that list, and it works with most Meta Box plugins.
It needs Meta Box and some technical ease
It is an extension: it needs the Meta Box plugin to work and does not run on its own. It does not create fields for you either: it uses the ones you already define with Meta Box. And it is not a visual wizard, so some technical ease is required.
Frequently asked questions before deciding
Do I have to redo my fields?
No. Your meta box definition stays as it is and you only add the table definition.
Does it work for user or category data?
Yes, it works with post, user, term and comment meta.
Is it the same as a custom model?
No. Saving fields in your own table leaves the post row in WordPress. The custom model avoids that row and gathers everything in one table.
Can I change the table later?
Yes, since it uses the method recommended by WordPress you can update its structure whenever you need.
Define the table before the data arrives
The best moment to use MB Custom Table is when designing the project, while there are still no thousands of records saved the usual way. Think about which fields each table will have, which column name each key will get and whether a custom model suits you better than a post. If you already have data in the meta tables, plan calmly how to move it to the new table and make a backup before touching anything.
