About Meta Box Tabs Extension
When the client opens a post and finds twenty fields in a row
You build a content type with all the custom fields the project needs and, when the edit screen opens, the client sees an endless column of boxes. They get lost, don't know what is required and end up calling you to ask where to change the phone number. Meta Box Tabs Extension splits those fields into tabs inside the same meta box.
The person who pays for the dashboard is not the one who uses it every day
The client values what they see on the website, but judges your work by the editing dashboard, which is what they touch every week. Tabs tackle exactly that, without you having to code your own interface.
How the tabs work in Meta Box Tabs Extension
It is an extension of the Meta Box plugin. You don't have to rewrite your meta boxes: you add parameters to the ones you already have, such as the title of each tab and which tab each field belongs to.
- Three tab styles, with the same interface as the WordPress admin, so nothing looks out of place on the edit screen.
- Position on top or on the left, similar to what WooCommerce does on the product screen.
- Icons on tabs: it supports WordPress Dashicons, and also any icon font or images.
- Box without wrapper: you can remove the frame of the meta box so the tabs look cleaner.
What makes sense to group into tabs
It works best when the fields have clear families. In a property listing, for example: basic data, gallery, location and technical data. In an event: dates, speakers, tickets. If a box has four fields, tabs only add clicks. Keep this extension for long boxes and think of the tab names from the point of view of the person editing, not yours.
Laying out fields inside each tab is up to another extension
- What it solves: grouping fields into tabs, giving them a title and icon, choosing position and style, and removing the meta box wrapper.
- What you cover with another plugin: placing fields in a grid inside a tab. That is what MB Columns is for, with a 12-column grid, and it works well alongside this extension.
- What you do yourself: decide which field goes in which tab, by stating it in each field's settings.
- What it doesn't do: it doesn't create fields on its own. It needs the Meta Box plugin installed, because it is an extension and doesn't work independently.
It is designed for people who define fields with code or configuration, that is, developers. If an end client is going to build their own boxes without anything technical, this is not the right tool.
Frequently asked questions
Does it work without Meta Box?
No. It is an extension and relies on the Meta Box plugin.
Do I have to rebuild the boxes I have already created?
No. You adapt them by adding the tab parameters to the existing configuration, without rewriting them from scratch.
Can I use my own icons?
Yes. It uses Dashicons by default, but it also accepts other icon fonts or images.
Does it fit the look of the admin?
Yes, it uses the same tab style as WordPress, and you can choose between three styles.
