About MonsterInsights - Site Notes Important Events Addon

The traffic spike nobody can explain

Visits shoot up on a Tuesday or drop suddenly on a Thursday and nobody remembers what happened that day: was a post published, was the theme changed, was a plugin touched? The numbers are in GA4, but the reason lives in the memory of whoever worked on the site, which is the least reliable record there is. And by the time someone finally remembers, weeks have gone by.

Site Notes is MonsterInsights' annotation tool for GA4: you leave a dated note inside your WordPress dashboard. This addon removes the manual part: notes are created on their own whenever something happens that you want to have dated.

What it records on its own, without you having to remember

The simple route is the integration with Uncanny Automator, an automation plugin that connects more than 170 plugins and apps. With it you can generate a note automatically when:

  • A new post or page is published.
  • A post or page is updated.
  • A comment is added.
  • A user is created.

And more triggers. The result is that you find the date of every important change inside your WordPress dashboard.

MonsterInsights Site Notes Important Events Addon and technical changes

If you need to record something that does not come from a publication, the addon gives you direct access to the Site Notes API. With it you decide which notes get created: theme, plugin or WordPress version changes, Site Health notices and anything else you can think of.

Uncanny Automator or the Site Notes API? Decide before you build anything

This addon is a complement: it needs MonsterInsights up and running and is designed for users of the Agency level. It does not measure anything new or interpret your data: it only writes dated notes. On the Automator route you need that plugin as well; on the API route you get full control, in exchange for defining yourself which notes are generated.

Does it work without MonsterInsights?

No. It is a MonsterInsights addon and relies on its Site Notes tool.

Do I need Uncanny Automator?

Only if you want the Automator integration. The alternative is to use the Site Notes API directly.

Does it automatically record plugin and theme changes?

With the API you can create notes of that kind, but you have to set them up. The Automator triggers described above are publications, content updates, comments and users.

Which version of Google Analytics is it for?

Site Notes is MonsterInsights' annotation tool for GA4.
