About Ninja Forms Save User Progress

Forms people fill in slowly: the buyer it suits (and the one it doesn't)

A scholarship application, a job application or a custom quote is rarely completed in one sitting: you have to find a document, check a detail, ask someone. If the form can't be paused, people close the tab and most never come back. Ninja Forms Save User Progress adds a save-and-continue button so that abandonment stops being final.

It suits you if you already work with Ninja Forms and your forms are long, multi-step, or filled in by people who come back more than once. It doesn't suit you if your forms have three fields (saving adds nothing) or if you use another form plugin, because it is an extension that only works inside Ninja Forms. And it is not a magic fix for every visitor: server-side saving requires the user to be logged in to your WordPress site.

Two ways to save: with an account or only in the browser

This is the decision that matters most before buying, because it changes what the button promises.

  • Logged-in users: progress is saved on the server, as a saved state separate from completed submissions. They can return days later from another device or browser and load it.
  • Visitors without an account: if you enable local browser storage in the form's advanced settings, their data stays in that browser. They can only recover it on the same device and browser, and they lose it if they clear their browsing data.

If you need everyone to be able to continue from any device, you will have to require registration. For that, it is combined with the Ninja Forms User Management extension, which lets visitors register on your site, save and finish later.

The button is placed like any other field

Save Progress adds a Save field to the Ninja Forms field library. You drag it to the spot in the form where you want the button and it works, with no code and no templates. It works on forms you have already published, so you don't have to rebuild them.

Saving also captures contact details before submission

Any Ninja Forms action can fire on save, not just on submit. That way you can get an email the moment someone pauses, with the partial data they have already entered. For a business that lives on applications, that is a contact you would otherwise have lost without knowing. You can also show the user a confirmation message on save, so they know their work is safe.

Several drafts, steps and attached files

  • Multiple saves per form: if you enable it in the advanced tab, each save is timestamped and appears in a customizable saved-progress table. The user can load an earlier one or edit an existing one. It fits quotes, order configurators or enrollments that are picked up again.
  • Multi-step forms: the state is kept across all steps and the person returns to the step where they left off. It works with the Multi Step Forms extension.
  • Uploaded files: file references are kept, so there is no need to attach them again. It works with the File Uploads extension.

What you see as an administrator

Server-side saves appear in Ninja Forms, under Submissions, in View Saves. You can check the partial data, edit a save or turn it into a completed submission without the user having to resubmit anything.
