About Paid Memberships Pro - Abandoned Cart Recovery
Recover Lost Sales at the Membership Checkout
When a user starts the checkout process to join a membership and abandons it before completing it, that sale is usually lost for good. Abandoned Cart Recovery for Paid Memberships Pro tackles this problem head-on: it detects incomplete checkouts and triggers a sequence of automated emails to bring that user back and turn them into a paying member.
How Cart Recovery Works
When someone abandons checkout, the plugin creates a recovery attempt and schedules a series of up to three reminder emails. By default, the first reminder goes out one hour after abandonment, the second at 24 hours, and the third and final one at 7 days. Each message includes a direct link to pick up the purchase where it was left off, as well as an opt-out link for those who don't want to receive any more reminders.
Keep in mind that this feature only works with payment gateways that generate a token order when checkout is left incomplete, such as Stripe Connect and PayPal Express.
Per-Level Configuration
Not every membership level needs abandoned cart recovery. The Add On lets you enable this feature individually from each level's settings, in the relevant section under Memberships > Settings > Levels. This way you can decide to apply recovery only to your higher-priced levels, for example.
Customizable Email Templates
The three reminder emails come preconfigured, but they can be fully edited from Memberships > Settings > Email Templates. The plugin supports template variables to personalize each message: a direct link to the abandoned cart, an opt-out link, and the name of the membership level left incomplete. You can also send test emails before activating the sequence in production.
Performance Reports
To assess whether the strategy is working, Abandoned Cart Recovery includes a summary widget in Memberships > Reports showing recovered revenue, recovered orders, and recovery attempts sent, viewable for the last 30 days, the last 12 months, and since the beginning. There's also a detailed report at Memberships > Abandoned Cart Recovery with the full history of each attempt: user data, the token order generated, the recovery status (in progress, recovered, or lost), and the dates each reminder was sent.
Privacy and Compliance
The Add On includes a privacy notice shown during checkout for levels with recovery enabled, automatically linking to the site's privacy policy page if one is already set up in WordPress. It also provides suggested text for updating that policy, so visitors know how their data is used if they abandon a purchase.
Customization for Developers
Those who need to adjust the default behavior have several WordPress filters available: to change the intervals between reminders, modify the privacy message shown at checkout, or control under what conditions an order should be targeted for recovery (for example, excluding free levels).
What Kind of Sites Abandoned Cart Recovery Works For
This Add On is built for sites with paid memberships where abandoned checkouts represent a real loss of revenue: online courses, private communities, subscription-based publications, and any project built on Paid Memberships Pro using Stripe Connect or PayPal Express as its gateway. It also works on sites where members can hold several active membership levels at once.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does it work with any Paid Memberships Pro payment gateway?
No. Currently it only works with gateways that generate a token order when checkout is abandoned, such as Stripe Connect and PayPal Express.
Can I enable it for just some membership levels?
Yes, activation is managed level by level from each membership level's settings; it's not a global, site-wide setting.
Can I change the content and timing of the emails?
Yes. The templates for the three reminders are fully editable from the dashboard, and the sending intervals can be adjusted via filters if the default values don't fit your strategy.
What happens if a user doesn't want to receive any more reminders?
Each email includes an opt-out link that immediately stops the recovery sequence for that user.
How do I know if cart recovery is paying off?
The plugin includes a summary report with recovered revenue and orders, plus a detailed history of each attempt, so you can decide whether to adjust, keep, or disable the feature.
