About Paid Memberships Pro - Roles Add On

A membership site often hits the same wall: the rest of your WordPress (forums, post editors, directories, other plugins) knows nothing about levels, only user roles. If you want members of a level to be able to do something different in those other pieces, their level has to translate into a role.

Paid Memberships Pro - Roles Add On: one WordPress role per level

When activated, the add-on creates a custom role for each membership level. It is displayed with the level name and its internal value follows the pattern pmpro_role_x, where x is the level ID. In addition, each level's settings get a field to assign one or more roles to members when they sign up.

The difference from a role created by hand is that the link is already made: whoever buys the level gets the role, and whoever cancels loses it.

Standard WordPress roles too, not just custom ones

You are not limited to the custom roles. You can assign native WordPress roles and combine several at once. For example, upgrade the members of a level to "Author" so they can publish on your site. It is useful in:

  • Communities where members contribute content.
  • Associations and member directories.
  • Sites where another plugin grants permissions based on the user's role.

In the level settings, the administrator role is hidden from the list by default, so it is hard to give it to someone by mistake. That behavior can be changed with a filter, but it is best left as it is.

Extra permissions are not included

Custom roles are born with the same capabilities as the subscriber role: logging in, resetting the password, editing the profile and viewing content. Nothing more. If you want a level to be able to create posts or moderate a BuddyPress or bbPress forum, you have to add that yourself.

  • Already solved: creating the role per level, assigning it at signup, removing it on cancellation, and showing the roles in the member and user lists.
  • You cover it: extra capabilities, with the pmpro_roles_default_caps filter (if you can code) or with a role editor plugin such as User Role Editor.
  • You cover it: bulk-updating members you already have, because they keep their previous role and it would take a database query.

What happens on cancellation or removal

If a membership is cancelled or removed, the custom roles of that level are withdrawn and the user moves to the site's default role, which you set under Settings > General. If you decide to stop using the add-on, the "Delete Roles and Deactivate" option returns everyone affected to the subscriber role and cleans the roles out of the database. Users with a standard role do not change.

Note that it is designed for sites where a member can hold one or more active levels, and it requires Paid Memberships Pro to be installed and active: on its own it does nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work without Paid Memberships Pro?

No. It is an add-on that depends on PMPro and adds its setting to the levels.

Does it change the role of the members I already have?

No. It only affects people who sign up after you configure it. Existing members keep their role unless you update them by hand with a query.

Can I give a level more than one role?

Yes, in the level settings you can choose one or several.

Can I change what each role can do?

Yes, with the pmpro_roles_default_caps filter or with a role editor such as User Role Editor.

What role does someone get when they cancel?

The site's default role, the one set under Settings > General, unless you change it with the corresponding filter.
