About PMPRO Addon Packages

Sell a single article without forcing anyone to subscribe

Some content doesn't fit a monthly fee: a report, a specific guide, a page with a downloadable template. If you only offer a subscription, people who want one thing leave, and if you give it away, you don't get paid. PMPRO Addon Packages lets you put a price on a specific page or post and charge for it once.

The idea behind it: on a membership site, the best seller isn't always the membership. Sometimes the buyer comes in for a single piece, and that one-off purchase is the best door into something bigger.

How PMPRO Addon Packages works with your levels

From the edit screen you mark a page or post as a package: you set an access price and choose which membership levels can buy it. Someone without access sees the excerpt and, at the bottom, a link to buy. Someone with access sees the full content (everything after the "read more" tag).

The purchase behavior changes depending on who arrives:

  • Already bought it: sees a link to open the content.
  • Has a valid level: buys the package without changing their membership.
  • Has no level, has a level that isn't allowed, or isn't logged in: with the buy button they get the right membership and the package in a single step.

If you only want to charge the page price and nothing else, create a free level and select it. If several levels (including free ones) should have access, check them all.

Useful features and limits to know beforehand

  • Optional expiration: with the PMPROAP_EXP_DAYS constant in the wp-config.php file you define how many days access lasts after purchase. By default it never expires, and the value is global for all packages.
  • All access: the pmproap_all_access_levels filter lets certain levels get into every package without buying anything.
  • Content types: by default only pages and posts, extendable with a filter if you know code.
  • Developer hooks: actions that run when someone gains or loses access to a package.
  • Direct link to checkout: you can link to the checkout of a specific package with a parameter in the URL for the level and the page.

What it doesn't do

It only supports a one-time charge: there are no recurring payments on a content purchase. Discount codes and taxes also can't be applied to the package purchase. If you sell with VAT or with coupons, this is a real obstacle. It also needs Paid Memberships Pro installed and active, and several settings (expiration, all access) require editing code.

A package shop with the shortcode

The [pmpro_addon_packages] shortcode shows a shop-style list on a page with all content that has a package price. You can choose the layout (table, blocks or columns), the order, the featured image, the button text, and exclude specific pages. Column layouts work with the Memberlite theme or a theme based on the Foundation 5 grid; with another theme, use table or blocks.

Frequently asked questions before buying

Can I sell content to someone without a membership?

Yes, but it goes through a level: create a free one, assign it to the package and the buyer only pays the page price.

Is the membership paid twice if I buy a package?

No. When buying, the plugin avoids charging the base level price again and keeps the membership's payment and expiration dates.

Can I charge a subscription for a single article?

No, only a one-time charge.

Does it work for content types like products or courses?

By default only pages and posts. Extending it requires a filter in code.

Can I apply coupons?

No, discount codes can't currently be applied to the package purchase.

The price is set on each page, and expiration applies to the whole site

To start, prepare the levels first: decide which ones can buy each package and whether you need a free one. Then mark each page or post with its price and levels, and check the view of a logged-out visitor to see the excerpt and the purchase link. If you want the notice text to be different, you can replace it with the filters for non-members and logged-out users. And remember that expiration isn't set per package: if you want different terms for different content, this plugin doesn't solve that on its own.
