Launching an affiliate program on a membership site usually ends one of two ways: paying for an external platform or patching together links with parameters by hand and losing track of who referred whom. PMPRO Affiliates Tracking is an add-on for Paid Memberships Pro that handles tracking inside WordPress itself.
An affiliate's journey, from URL to recorded order
The best way to see what it does is to follow an affiliate from the start.
Step 1: you create the affiliate
Under Memberships > Affiliates you click to add a new affiliate. The code is generated automatically or you replace it with your own, and it is added to the site URL as a parameter (?pa=CODE or &pa=CODE). You assign the WordPress user who will see the reports, an internal contact name (not shown publicly) and, if you want, a commission from 0 to 100%.
Step 2: someone arrives through their link
Arriving through that URL stores a cookie. By default it lasts 30 days, but you can set a different length for each affiliate. If that person comes back later and pays within that window, the order is linked to the affiliate.
Step 3: payment and commission
When the order is marked as paid, the plugin calculates the commission on that order's total. You can choose to count only the first purchase or to keep crediting the original affiliate on every recurring charge.
Step 4: paying the affiliate is up to you
Here is the main limit: the plugin does not handle payouts or generate payout reports. In the admin report you mark each referral as paid, but noting what you owe and transferring it (for example via PayPal) is done by hand. If you have dozens of affiliates, plan for that administrative work.
Affiliates created automatically at checkout
If your program is open, you can enable an option on a membership level that creates the affiliate code automatically when checkout is completed. That way you offer a referral bonus to each new member without signing anyone up by hand. Note that it only affects people who join afterwards. Members you already had on that level are not entered into the program.
What the affiliate sees and what you see
- The affiliate has a report page with their commission history, their referrals and a help section for generating links. It is linked from the member links on the account page.
- You see everyone's activity in the WordPress admin and can add, edit or disable codes.
The report page is generated from the Paid Memberships Pro page settings, or you create it yourself with the affiliate report block or shortcode. With the shortcode attributes you decide which columns and options the affiliate sees, such as the back link, export or help.
Frequently asked questions about PMPRO Affiliates Tracking
Does it work without Paid Memberships Pro?
No. It is an add-on and needs Paid Memberships Pro installed and active.
Can I use another tracking tool at the same time?
Yes. Each affiliate accepts a tracking code in HTML or JavaScript that runs on the confirmation page, with variables for the order ID, the amount and the level name.
Are commissions mandatory?
No. They are optional and must be enabled for each affiliate. Without them, you only record which orders each code brought in.
Can affiliates be called something else?
Yes, the term can be renamed to fit your program, for example if you prefer to talk about ambassadors.
Does it calculate and pay affiliates automatically?
No. It calculates the commission on each paid order, but you make the payment yourself.
