About PMPRO Custom Level Cost Text Addon
The “now” that confuses people right before they pay
PMPro's default price text is correct, but clumsy: “The price for membership is $20.00 now and then $10.00 per Year”. On a free level it shows a “$0.00 now” that looks like a mistake, and on a page with three plans that same sentence repeated tires people more than it informs them.
Whoever sells a membership usually spends hours polishing the content and almost no time on the sentence that explains how much is charged and when. It is the line visitors read right before deciding whether to enter their card, and it deserves more care than a button. PMPRO Custom Level Cost Text Addon lets you rewrite it without touching code.
Walkthrough with PMPRO Custom Level Cost Text Addon: from global to specific
Imagine a monthly membership, an annual one and a discount code for a campaign. This is how you work:
- First, the global settings. In Memberships > Settings > Advanced, under Other Settings, there are five options: remove the word “now”, replace “$0.00” with “Free”, swap “per” for “/”, hide unnecessary decimals (the “.00”) and abbreviate periods (Month to Mo, Week to Wk, Year to Yr). They apply to all levels at once, and also to the emails the system generates.
- Then, a specific level. When you edit a level, under Other Settings, you will find the cost text field. You can write your own sentence or build it with placeholders. Levels you don't customize keep using the global settings.
- Next, the discount code. In each code you expand the section of the level you care about and write the text that will be shown to whoever uses it, for example one that mentions the offer. If you don't customize it, the global settings apply.
- Finally, the placeholders. With them the text is fed from the level's data, so you don't have to rewrite it when you change an amount.
Among the placeholders are !!default_cost_text!! and !!short_cost_text!! (the original text in full or in short form), !!level_name!!, !!level_description!!, !!initial_payment!!, !!billing_amount!!, !!cycle_number!!, !!cycle_period!!, !!billing_limit!! (0 means infinite), !!trial_amount!!, !!trial_limit!!, !!expiration_number!! and !!expiration_period!!.
The changes show up at checkout, on the levels page and in emails. It works with PMPro's levels page or with the Advanced Levels Page Add On. The limits are clear: it needs Paid Memberships Pro installed and active, it only changes what is displayed (not what is charged) and it adds no design of its own to your pricing page.
Questions before you touch the visible price
Does it change the amount that gets charged?
No. It only modifies the sentence that is displayed. The charge is still defined by the level's settings.
Can I show a different text when someone uses a code?
Yes. Each discount code supports its own text per level.
Do I need to code?
No. Everything is done from PMPro's settings. If you are a developer, there are two filters, pclct_variables and pclct_variables_content, to extend the placeholders or change what they are replaced with.
Does it work without Paid Memberships Pro?
No, it is an add-on and depends on that plugin.
An elegant price that doesn't explain the charge ends in complaints
Abbreviating, dropping decimals and shortening sentences looks good, but the cost text is often the only way a person knows how much will be charged to their card. If your level combines an initial payment, a recurring one and a trial period, an overly trimmed sentence can hide exactly that difference.
Before publishing, review at checkout every level whose initial payment differs from the recurring one, or that has a trial or expiration, and check that the resulting text makes clear what is paid today and what is paid later.
