About PMPRO Payment Plans Addon
You have one membership level and two kinds of buyer: the one who wants to pay a small amount each month, and the one who would rather pay for the whole year if it costs less. The usual workaround is to duplicate the level, repeat the same content protection and end up with a confusing levels page. This add on takes another route: a single level with several ways to pay for it.
One level, several ways to pay: the full PMPRO Payment Plans walkthrough
The clearest way to see it is through one case: a membership with a single type of access to your content, which you want to sell monthly and annually.
Step 1: the main price
After activating the add on, nothing changes on its own. You edit the level (or create a new one) and keep as the main price the one you consider most common, for example a fixed monthly fee with its initial payment.
Step 2: adding the plans
In the same level a Payment Plans section appears with a button to add plans. Each plan expands so you can adjust its name, price and the details for expiration or trial period. The price fields are the same as those of a regular PMPro level. For the example, you add a plan called Annual with the yearly amount.
Step 3: what the buyer sees
At checkout a selector shows the options. The main price comes first and the additional active plans go below it. The plan name is also displayed on the member's account and billing pages, so it is worth choosing it clearly.
How many plans to offer without making buyers hesitate
- Default plan: you indicate which is the main price shown in the level section.
- Display order: you decide in which sequence they are listed at checkout.
- Active or inactive status: if a plan already has members, set it to inactive instead of deleting it. If you delete it, you lose the reference to that plan in the members and orders that used it.
The recommendation is to offer two or three options. More than that creates indecision at the moment of payment, which is exactly where you least want it.
Frequently asked questions about PMPRO Payment Plans
Does it work without Paid Memberships Pro?
No. It is an add on for Paid Memberships Pro and needs that plugin installed and active.
Can I use discount codes with the plans?
No. Payment plans are not compatible with PMPro's built-in discount codes. If you plan to run coupons or sales, set up separate levels.
Can I see separately who pays annually and who pays monthly?
Not with PMPro's filters: they all belong to the same level. Your gateway's reports will not be as detailed either, because the plans share the same product (in Stripe, for example).
Can I send a link with a plan already selected?
Yes, the add on's documentation explains how to build a checkout link with a preselected plan.
When separate levels suit you better
Plans simplify checkout and access control: a plan belongs to a single level, so you protect new content only once and every member gets access, however they pay. They also help retention: someone who sees the annual saving and prepays is less likely to leave mid-year.
But if you want extra content only for people who pay annually, you need distinct levels. The same goes if you value tracking churn by plan with PMPro's reports, or if you are going to work with coupons. Many sites keep separate levels even when they grant the same access, precisely for that data.
In short: PMPRO Payment Plans fits if you have a single type of access, want a clean checkout and do not depend on discounts or reports by payment mode.
