About Really Simple SSL Pro

From putting up the padlock to locking down the whole site

Really Simple SSL started out as exactly what its name says: the plugin that switched on HTTPS without a fight with .htaccess. That part is still there, including generating Let's Encrypt certificates when the host does not provide them.

But today's product is considerably more than that, and worth knowing before comparing it with others: it is a full security suite competing with the big security plugins, not just the SSL ones.

What it protects

  • Firewall: filters malicious traffic before it reaches WordPress, with performance as a design priority. In security that matters because the firewall runs on every visit, legitimate ones included.
  • Login: strong password policy, two-factor authentication and login attempt limits. That is where most automated attacks come in.
  • WordPress hardening: 18 measures against WordPress's own configuration, which ships several things open that almost no site needs.
  • Vulnerabilities: recurring scans with automated responses, so you learn a plugin of yours has a known flaw before somebody uses it.
  • Security headers: protecting the visitor at the browser level.

What carries the most value

Of all the above, the part that most changes real risk is vulnerability scanning. Most WordPress sites do not fall to sophisticated attacks: they fall because they had a plugin installed with a flaw published three months earlier and nobody updated. Finding out in time is what prevents that.

Licensing

Ranges from a single domain to agencies with more than 25. There is also a separate plugin specifically for multisite installations.

One practical note

A firewall and 18 hardening measures can break things that used to work: REST API calls, external integrations, some plugin making unusual requests. It is worth enabling it in stages and checking, rather than switching everything on at once on a site taking orders.
