About GetPaid Braintree Payments

Your customer reads a name on their statement and decides whether they remember you

Someone bought from you a few weeks ago. Today they check their card activity and find a charge under a name that means nothing to them. If they do not connect it with you, they may think it is not theirs and ask you or their bank for an explanation. The sale was fine, the charge was fine, and you still have a problem.

The last screen of your purchase process is not on your website: it is the card statement. Braintree Payment Gateway, an add-on that brings Braintree to GetPaid, has a field for that moment, Credit Card Statement Name. It deserves your time, because it has a strict format.

Card payments on your own website

With the add-on active, GetPaid adds Braintree to its payment options:

  • Payment without leaving your site: the customer pays by credit card from your website.
  • Cards: Visa, MasterCard, debit and others.
  • Online and mobile payments, from customers around the world.
  • 3D Secure (3DS) for payment authentication.
  • Presentation: a checkout title and description, and a priority against your other gateways.

Twenty-two characters to be recognized

The statement name has two parts separated by an asterisk: the company or trading name and the product. The company part accepts only three lengths, and each one sets the product's maximum:

  • A 3-character company and a product of up to 18.
  • A 7-character company and a product of up to 14.
  • A 12-character company and a product of up to 9.

With the asterisk, the total reaches 22 at most. It is best to choose the combination based on the name your customer knows, which may be your brand and not your legal name. Then check it on a real transaction to see how it reads.

Three levels of fraud control

The Fraud Tool field decides what review applies to payments:

  • Basic: the default option, with no setup.
  • Kount Standard: requires enabling advanced fraud tools in Braintree.
  • Kount Custom: requires contacting Braintree support.

The two Kount levels are not settled from WordPress: they are enabled on the Braintree side first and then selected in the setting.

The first charge goes through the sandbox

You need GetPaid installed, this add-on active and a Braintree account, plus a sandbox account for testing.

  1. Create the sandbox account and get the test values.
  2. Go to GetPaid, Settings, Payment Gateways, Braintree, and check Activate and Enable Sandbox.
  3. Enter the sandbox Public Key, Private Key and Merchant ID, and save.
  4. Make payments with Braintree's test cards.
  5. Turn off sandbox, enter your live credentials and save.
  6. Copy the Webhook URL into your Braintree control panel.

Sandbox and live credentials have separate fields, so they do not overwrite each other. Do not leave the last step for later: the webhook address is copied from these same settings.

If Braintree does not suit your business

This add-on connects Braintree to GetPaid and to no other plugin. It does not create your Braintree account either. If you plan to charge subscriptions, include a renewal in your tests before offering them through this gateway.

For another route within GetPaid there is GetPaid Square Payment Gateway, which works in the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan and the UK, and serves those who already take payments with Square. If you sell with WooCommerce and not GetPaid, the catalog has WooCommerce Stripe Payment Gateway.

If you are connecting Braintree for the first time

Does it work without GetPaid?

No. It is an add-on for that plugin, and its options appear when both are active.

Where do the keys come from?

From your Braintree control panel: Public Key, Private Key and Merchant ID, one set for sandbox and another for live.

Does the customer leave my website to pay?

No. They pay by card without leaving your site.

Can I test without really charging?

Yes. With Enable Sandbox on and Braintree's test card numbers.

What happens if I enter another length in the statement name?

The company part accepts only 3, 7 or 12 characters, and each length sets the product maximum, so fit the text to those limits.
