About Role Based Pricing for WooCommerce
One product with different prices without duplicating your catalog
When you sell to individuals and to professionals, or you have regular customers with their own terms, the price stops being a single number. The usual workarounds are duplicating products, emailing coupons or keeping rates in a separate spreadsheet. All of that gets out of hand as soon as the catalog grows.
Role Based Pricing for WooCommerce changes what each user role, or each specific customer, sees for the same product. You can set a fixed price, raise it or lower it by a percentage or a fixed amount. All other customers keep seeing the original price.
The hard part isn't setting different prices, it's remembering six months later why one customer pays 15% less and another 10% more. Since all rules can be active at the same time, it pays to keep a written record of which role or customer has which terms. The plugin applies rules, it doesn't decide them for you.
Rules by category instead of editing product by product
There are two ways to work. At product level, you fill in the price for each role (if left blank, the regular price is used), change the price for a specific customer and define a minimum and maximum order quantity. In variable products you can configure each variation separately.
The other is rule-based management: you create a rule choosing roles and customers, the type of adjustment and the affected products or categories, and it applies in bulk. It's the sensible option when you want, for example, a distributor discount across an entire category.
- Possible adjustments: fixed price, increase or discount, as a percentage or a fixed amount.
- Display: with a reduction, the original price appears crossed out with the new one right below; with an increase, the higher price replaces the original.
- Schedule: each rule accepts a start and end date.
- Sale products: you can stop the profile discount from stacking on items that are already marked down, and choose whether the discount starts from the sale price or the original one.
- CSV: import and export of prices by profile and of the rules too.
Hiding the price and the buy button from visitors who aren't logged in
If part of your catalog shouldn't have a public price, the plugin lets you hide the price or the Add to cart button from logged-out visitors and from specific roles. You can apply it to all products, to categories or to individual products.
In its place you can show your own text and a button with a custom link, for example to a trade account request form. That way visitors know what to do instead of finding an empty gap.
A practical tip: if you hide prices for commercial reasons, check on your store that they don't show up elsewhere, such as in the page source, in variable products or in the structured data generated by SEO plugins. Test it in a browser with no active session.
Is role-based pricing enough, or do you need volume rates?
Role Based Pricing for WooCommerce is ideal if your price difference depends on who is buying. If it depends on how much they buy, look closely at the limits before deciding:
- The minimum and maximum quantity is for restricting orders, not for creating volume price tiers.
- It doesn't manage the registration form: assigning a role at sign-up or asking for extra fields requires another plugin.
- Adjustments apply to the price the product already has in WooCommerce; it doesn't replace a tiered pricing system.
Can I give a special price to a single customer without creating a role?
Yes. Both at product level and in rules you can choose individual customers as well as roles.
Does it work with variable products?
Yes, it supports variations and each one can have its own price per role or customer.
Can I keep the 10% discount from applying to items already on sale?
Yes, there is an option to exclude sale products from profile discounts.
Does it work for quantity-based price tiers?
Not as a main feature. It lets you set order minimums and maximums, but not price steps based on quantity.
Can I show a message instead of the price?
Yes, you can replace the price with your own text and the buy button with a button with a custom link.
