About SearchWP Custom Results Order
Your internal search may return correct results and still leave the page you most want people to see in third place. The algorithm does not know what matters to your business, and that shows most on the searches that repeat the most.
Whoever knows the content beats the algorithm
Some queries deserve a manual review, instead of leaving everything to a relevance formula. You know your content better than the algorithm does.
How SearchWP Custom Results Order lets you choose what goes first
It is a SearchWP extension that you activate from the plugin's own interface. Here are its functions:
- Promote by keyword: you see the results for a specific search and move any post or page to the top with one click.
- Order several results: you are not limited to one. You can promote several and reorder them for that keyword.
- No keyword limit: you can apply custom rankings to as many queries as you like.
- One order per engine: if you have created several search engines in SearchWP for different uses, each one accepts its own order.
- Exact match: it is enabled by default to keep irrelevant content out of the results.
Everything is done from the dashboard, with no code.
What it needs and what it does not do
It does not work on its own: it is a SearchWP extension and requires the main plugin. It does not work on WordPress.com either, only on self-hosted installs. Also, the order is defined query by query: it is not a rule that automatically raises all posts in a category. If you want one content type to carry more weight in general, that is adjusted in SearchWP's engines, not here.
Common questions before you start
Can I have a different order in each search engine on the site?
Yes, if you have created several engines in SearchWP, you can set their own rankings for each one.
Do I need to code anything?
No. Promoting and reordering are done from the dashboard.
Does it highlight the searched terms in results?
SearchWP can highlight terms and generate excerpts around them, but that is a feature of the main plugin, not of this extension.
Which queries to review first
Start with what your visitors already search for: the terms that repeat the most, the names of your products or services, and the questions that end up in support. For each one, look at what comes first and decide whether it is what you would want that person to see. If not, promote the right page. Repeating this review from time to time, when you change content, keeps an old promotion from pointing to something outdated.
The order is saved keyword by keyword, so start with a few
Activate the extension from SearchWP, run a test search and check how the order looks on the front end. It is better to work with ten or fifteen key queries and expand later, rather than trying to cover the whole site on day one. If you use several engines, define the order in the one that each search form actually uses.
