About Smart OpenGraph by PixelYourSite

The link preview is the advert you never designed

It happens every time somebody shares one of your pages. They paste the link into a messaging group, a social network or an email, and up comes a card with an image, a title and a description. That card is all fifteen people will see before deciding whether to click.

And almost nobody chose it. Without the right tags, each platform takes whatever it finds: sometimes the header logo, sometimes the first image in the content, sometimes nothing at all and out comes a grey rectangle with the web address underneath. In a shop that means your product gets shared with no photograph.

Smart OpenGraph places those tags, and it also does a second thing worth understanding separately.

The two functions

  • OpenGraph tags properly placed, so the link preview shows the image, title and description you decide.
  • Meta product catalogue microdata, letting the platform build the catalogue automatically when somebody visits your WooCommerce products.

The automatic catalogue deserves an explanation

It is the lesser known part and the one that brings real value to a shop that advertises.

To advertise specific products on Meta the platform has to know your catalogue: what you sell, at what price, with which image and whether there is stock. The usual route is generating and maintaining a data feed updated daily, and building that properly is a task plenty of people get stuck on.

The route this plugin opens is different: microdata on the product page itself lets the catalogue build itself as visitors pass through the products. It is simpler to get running, and it has a logical consequence worth knowing: products nobody visits take longer to enter. For a catalogue with traffic it works well; for one just published with no visits, the data feed is still faster.

A detail almost nobody checks

The preview image gets cached on each platform. If you change a product's photograph, the shared link can keep showing the previous one for days.

Every network has its debugging tool for forcing a refresh, and it is worth using on the day you change something important, especially before a campaign. It is a minute of work that avoids sharing an offer with last season's image.

Requirements

It needs WordPress and PixelYourSite, and WooCommerce for the product catalogue side.

And a practical warning: if your search plugin already generates OpenGraph tags, only one of them should be doing it. Two plugins placing the same tags give unpredictable results, and it is one of the hardest faults to find because the site looks perfect and only fails when shared.

Alternatives in the catalogue

Before buying anything, check whether your search plugin already does it: Yoast SEO Premium, Rank Math Pro and All in One SEO Pro include control over the sharing tags. If you already have one of the three, this part is probably covered and what this adds is the product catalogue.

This add-on's base is PixelYourSite Pro, and from the same maker Super Pack bundles the pixel control add-ons.

And if what you want is measuring your shop's conversions properly, which is the problem next door, Pixel Manager for WooCommerce is the sector's other option.

Frequently asked questions

What are OpenGraph tags?
The ones deciding the image, title and description shown when somebody shares your link.

Does it build the Meta catalogue on its own?
With microdata, as visitors pass through the products. The ones nobody visits take longer.

Does it replace the catalogue data feed?
It is another route, simpler to set up. With an untrafficked catalogue, the feed is still faster.

Does it clash with my search plugin?
It can. Only one should generate those tags, or the results are unpredictable.

Why does the old image keep being shared?
Because each platform caches it. A refresh has to be forced with their tool.

Does it work without PixelYourSite?
No. It is an add-on to the base plugin.
