About Spectra Pro
Spectra split in two, and this Pro goes with the half that no longer grows
People who build with a blocks plugin rarely ask what will happen to their pages in three years. With Spectra the question already has an answer, and it is worth knowing before building anything on top of it.
The free plugin that used to be called Spectra is now called Spectra Legacy, and Spectra Pro has been renamed Spectra Pro Legacy, its companion. Separately there is Spectra Blocks, a new and independent plugin where all new feature development goes, with its own Pro. Legacy keeps receiving security and compatibility patches, but no new features.
What matters is moving from one to the other: migrating means rebuilding by hand, page by page, and today there is no converter for Legacy pages. Spectra Pro is still useful, above all on sites already built with Spectra. But every new page you build with it is one more page you will rebuild some day if you make the jump.
What it adds to Spectra
- Loop Builder for sections that repeat: you pick the content type, include or exclude taxonomies, posts and authors, set how many per page and sort by date, title or author, with five starting layouts.
- Login and registration blocks for users.
- Dynamic content from WordPress custom fields and from plugins such as ACF, Pods, Meta Box or Toolset.
- Popup Builder, an Instagram block and custom CSS for each page.
- Pro versions of animations, popups, modal, slider, countdown and gallery, with a custom URL on lightbox captions.
An add-on tied to Spectra Legacy
It does not work alone. These are features added to Spectra, not a standalone plugin: without the free one active it does nothing.
It is not for Spectra Blocks. Each free plugin has its own Pro, and they are not interchangeable. If your site is already on Spectra Blocks, this is not the companion you are looking for.
It does not migrate your pages. Pages built with Legacy blocks stay as they are until you decide to rebuild them, and colours, typography and global settings get configured again in Spectra Blocks.
Who it makes sense for today
If your site is already built with Spectra, it is the natural path: it adds Loop Builder, login forms and dynamic content without touching what works. There is no deadline and no required migration.
If you are starting a project from scratch, think twice. Building it on the branch that gets no new features means the rebuild is already in the budget, even if it has no date. Both plugins can be active at the same time during a transition.
Installing it on top of Spectra Legacy
Spectra Legacy needs WordPress 5.6 or later and PHP 7.4 or later, and Spectra Pro needs it installed and active. For comparison, Spectra Blocks needs WordPress 6.6 and PHP 8.1.
- Check which free plugin you have: Spectra Legacy, the one formerly called Spectra.
- Upload the zip under Plugins, Add New, and activate it.
- Start with the Loop Builder on a real listing, such as the latest posts in a category.
- If you already store data in custom fields, connect them as dynamic content before designing templates by hand.
Other block collections in the catalogue
To extend the block editor there are other collections with their own track record: Kadence Blocks Pro, Stackable Premium and GenerateBlocks Pro.
They all share the underlying rule: what you build with a blocks plugin depends on it. And if you want a theme from the same vendor, Astra Pro extends the Astra theme.
Questions about Spectra Pro, Legacy and Blocks
Are Spectra Pro and Spectra Pro Legacy the same thing?
Yes. It was renamed that way to tell it apart from the Spectra Blocks Pro.
Does it work without the free Spectra?
No. It is an add-on and needs Spectra Legacy installed and active.
Does it work with Spectra Blocks?
No. Spectra Blocks has its own Pro.
Can I convert my pages to Spectra Blocks?
Not automatically. Migration is a manual rebuild, page by page.
Is Spectra Legacy abandoned?
No. It receives security and compatibility patches, but no new features.
