About Tasty Pins – Optimize your blogs images
One field for two readers who want different things
A blog that gets visits from Pinterest has a conflict hidden in every image. A pin description aims to get someone to save and click. Alt text exists for something else: it is what a screen reader says aloud to a blind or low-vision person, and what helps Google understand the image.
Without a separate place for the pin text, the temptation is to stuff Pinterest keywords into the alt text. Then the same sentence works for two audiences and serves both badly.
Tasty Pins, by WP Tasty, separates those fields. Each image keeps its alt text and gets its own Pinterest title and description, and it also controls which image gets saved and how readers are invited to save it.
What you decide image by image
- Pinterest title and text, separate from the alt text, which does not change when you install the plugin.
- Default values for images without their own title or description.
- Repin ID per image.
- Disable pinning on images that do not belong on Pinterest.
- Hidden images: not visible on the page, and they appear when a reader uses a save button to pick an image from your site.
- Force pinning: the hidden image becomes the default when someone saves from that post.
Custom titles and descriptions are used regardless of how the pin is created, so the Pinterest browser extension is not needed.
Buttons, banner and follow box
Its settings are split across buttons, follow box, banner and converter. This is what you control:
- Save button, basic or custom, with more shape and placement options.
- Visibility: always visible or only on hover.
- Mobile: since there is no hover there, it has its own options, including showing the button on tap.
- Where it appears: by post type, with ignored selectors to exclude elements and a global setting to turn it on or off.
- Banner in the "Pin this" style, with text you can fit to your niche and the option to disable regular pinning on it.
Tasty Pins does not write, design or publish
It does not write the descriptions. They are added by hand, one post at a time. On a blog with years of archives, that means starting with the posts already getting traffic.
It does not design the image either. You create the Pinterest graphic and upload it to the media library.
Its features do not include publishing or scheduling pins: it prepares what the reader saves, but it does not post to your Pinterest account.
It has known exceptions: Visual Composer, Schema Premium, OptimizePress and WooCommerce product images. It works with most themes and builders, including Elementor, Divi and Thrive, but if your site uses one of those pieces, test it before counting on it.
Migrating from Grow or Social Warfare and getting started
If you are coming from Mediavine Grow or Social Warfare, the built-in converters copy your Pinterest images and descriptions and leave the originals untouched.
To get it running:
- Upload the plugin file without unzipping it and activate it.
- Choose the button style, where it appears and how it shows.
- Set the default title and description.
- Click an image inside the editor to fill in its Pinterest fields.
- Add hidden images in the Tasty Pins box at the bottom of the post edit screen.
- Check Force pinning of hidden images if you want that image to be the default.
If you are after a different Pinterest piece
If what you want is to publish to Pinterest yourself without doing it by hand, Pinterest Automatic Pin automatically pins the images from your posts, exactly what Tasty Pins does not do.
Novashare is a lightweight social sharing plugin that also offers image hover pins. And to measure what Pinterest brings to a store, the PixelYourSite Pinterest add-on sends events through the Pinterest tag and API.
Alt text, pins and products
Does it change my current alt text?
No. It stays as it is, and Pinterest descriptions are added whenever you want.
Does it publish pins to my account?
That is not among its features. It works on what your readers save.
Does it work for store product images?
WooCommerce product images are one of its known exceptions.
