About Toolset Maps

A map with pins tells nobody what is close to them

Your clinic directory already has every location on the map. A visitor opens it on a phone, sees a cloud of markers and starts pinching in, neighborhood by neighborhood, looking for theirs. All the information is there, but the work of finding the answer was left in their hands.

People entering a local directory usually arrive with a distance in mind, and a map only shows positions. The value appears when the site turns those positions into a short list. Toolset Maps brings that piece to the Toolset ecosystem: it adds an address field and a map block, and lets you filter content by radius from the visitor's location or from another point.

The address field and the map block

  • Address field in Types, which you assign to a field group and which appears when editing that content type.
  • Map block to display content as markers.
  • Three directory views: text only, map only, or text and map.
  • Map in the single template, with a marker at the item's location, and your own design for the marker and its popup.
  • Simple map for contact or about us pages.
  • Marker clustering: off by default and switched on, with settings for minimum size, grid and zoom.
  • Shortcodes for developers: markers by field, address or coordinates, a custom icon by URL and a distance value between two points.

A radius that turns the map into a short list

In the distance filter, visitors enter a location and a radius, and the site shows what falls inside. You can also ask for the opposite, what falls outside that radius, for example to separate what requires a longer trip.

This filter combines with other Toolset filters, so visitors can ask for a distance and another criterion of your directory at once. For it to work well in that combination, set the "Should distance center input be required" option to No.

With the distance on screen the result gains context: the value calculated between two points can be inserted in the template. That lets you show, next to each result, how far away it is.

The conditions that decide whether it will work

The address must be stored in an Address field. The filter compares against a field of that type, so free text does not serve this function. If you already have content with addresses in ordinary fields, plan to move them to the new field.

Visitor location requires HTTPS. Without it, that person cannot center the search on their own position, though they can type an address.

The map provider asks for setup. You can choose Google Maps, Azure Maps or OpenStreetMap. The first two require an API key from their service before showing maps, and OpenStreetMap works without a key.

Toolset Maps does not build the directory on its own either. It defines where each thing is and how it is drawn, but content types, fields and lists are created with the rest of Toolset.

Building a listing with a distance filter

Toolset Types must be installed on the site, because the Address field lives there. For a results listing it also makes sense to have Toolset Views.

  1. Install Toolset Maps and open Toolset, Settings, Maps.
  2. Choose the provider under "Map to use" and add the key if it needs one.
  3. Create a field group and add an Address field to your content type.
  4. Fill in the addresses of a few test items.
  5. Create a view with text and map, and add the distance filter.
  6. Test the search from a phone with your site on HTTPS.

Maps and locators without Toolset

WP Go Maps works with more map engines, such as Leaflet, OpenLayers and Azure Maps. Its free edition already brings unlimited markers and a store locator, and it does not ask you to set up content types. Agile Store Locator is another catalog option focused on locating stores. If you already use Toolset, Toolset Types and Toolset Views are the pieces that go with this plugin.

Questions when planning a map directory

Does it work for a single address on the contact page?

Yes, although setting up Toolset for a single point may be more than you need.

Can the markers be customized?

Yes. You can design the marker and its popup, and use your own image by URL.

How do I avoid a cloud of markers?

Turn on clustering: nearby markers show as a group.
