About WooCommerce Composite Products
A kit sells as one thing, but your stock is made of loose parts
Selling a custom computer, a skateboard or a gift box often ends up as a list of variations that is impossible to maintain, or as email orders where someone assembles the kit by hand. And there is a problem almost nobody sees until it happens: the customer buys a combination, but your inventory is parts. If a set of wheels sells out, the whole kit can no longer be sold even though everything else is in the warehouse.
WooCommerce Composite Products starts from that reality. You define components (deck, trucks, wheels, bearings) and fill each one with products you already have in your store. Because every option is a real product, stock is tracked part by part and sold-out options become unavailable in the configurator.
How WooCommerce Composite Products builds the kit from your catalog
First you create the components. Then you choose what each one offers: products one by one or whole categories. They can be simple products, variable products or Product Bundles packages, and also virtual or downloadable versions of those types.
- Pricing: you can set a base price for the whole composite product and also keep the individual prices of what is chosen in each component. There are discounts that reward adding optional parts or accessories.
- Flow and layout: step by step or on a single page, with different option styles. The customer sees the price and validation while building their product.
- Large catalogs: the options view supports pagination, sorting and filtering, so nobody gets lost among hundreds of wheels.
- Conditional logic: show or hide entire steps or specific options depending on what the customer has already chosen, guiding them toward valid combinations.
If you develop, you get REST API compatibility and a good number of action and filter hooks. It also works with the WooCommerce cart and checkout blocks.
Three stores, three different uses of WooCommerce Composite Products
The store with a deep catalog
A skate shop with dozens of decks, trucks and wheels needs customers to filter and sort, not scroll down an endless list. The paginated view and per-component stock control matter here: sold-out items disappear from the options instead of causing an order you cannot fulfill.
The gift or made-to-order jewelry store
Gift boxes and made-to-order jewelry work better with a guided flow, one decision per step. Conditional logic avoids combinations that make no sense, and discounts for adding optional accessories push customers to complete the set.
The agency building configurators for clients
If every project asks for something different, the REST API and the hooks let you adapt the behavior without rebuilding the plugin. Keep in mind that you will need to spend time defining the components properly before touching any code.
Frequently asked questions about WooCommerce Composite Products
Do I have to recreate my products?
No. Components are filled with products that already exist in your catalog, added one by one or by whole categories.
Does it track the inventory of each part?
Yes. Each option is a real product, so stock is tracked at component level and sold-out options cannot be chosen in the configurator.
Can it handle many options without overwhelming the customer?
It is designed to go from small kits to configurators with thousands of options. With the view that supports pagination, sorting and filtering, customers get to the part they want.
Can I hide options based on earlier choices?
Yes, both entire steps and individual options, using conditional logic.
Every option must exist as a product, and it is not for fixed packages
Everything you offer in a component has to be created beforehand as a product in your store. For a package with static contents, such as a closed set with a discount, Product Bundles is the simpler option. And if you only want to personalize a single product with text, engraving or gift wrap, you want Product Add-Ons. Composite Products pays off when the customer assembles a product out of several different products.
