About WooCommerce GoCardless
Charging a card for a monthly fee, a large invoice or an installment means paying a commission on every charge. This plugin connects your store to GoCardless so you can collect directly from the customer's bank account.
Charging a recurring customer with WooCommerce GoCardless, step by step
Picture a store with fees, invoices or installment payments. Here is how the case plays out:
- Step 1, the order: the customer reaches the checkout and chooses to pay with their bank account.
- Step 2, the payment: they enter their account details in the GoCardless form and stay on your site during the process. There are two routes: direct debit and Instant Bank Pay, the latter only in supported countries and currencies.
- Step 3, the following charges: this requires WooCommerce Subscriptions, which is bought separately. The GoCardless plugin accepts the payments for those subscription products, but the weekly, monthly or yearly schedule is managed by Subscriptions.
- Step 4, failed payments: GoCardless offers additional products such as Success+ (smart retries) and Protect+ (fraud detection). These are GoCardless features, not features of the plugin on its own.
The part nobody looks at: the GoCardless account matters more than the plugin
To use the plugin you need a GoCardless account and an SSL certificate. The plugin only connects to GoCardless.
The plugin's ratings are low (2.6 out of 5 with 11 reviews) and several complaints are not about the code but about the service: account closures and withheld funds. That is the opinion of specific users, but it is worth reading before relying on this channel for all of your cash flow. A good practice for businesses collecting by bank payment is not to have a single payment method active.
What WooCommerce GoCardless covers and what it doesn't
- It accepts direct debits (BACS, SEPA, ACH and others) and open banking payments in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany and France.
- It works with WooCommerce Subscriptions and WooCommerce Pre-Orders, both separate plugins.
- It is compatible with the cart and checkout blocks and with high performance order storage (HPOS).
- It is not a card gateway: if your customers want to pay by card, you need another payment method.
- It does not create subscriptions on its own.
A direct debit payment is not confirmed like a card payment: it usually takes longer and can fail after the order. If you sell physical products, decide whether you ship when the order is confirmed or when the money arrives.
Frequently asked questions
Can I charge subscriptions with this plugin alone?
No. For recurring charges you need WooCommerce Subscriptions. GoCardless is the gateway used to collect those payments.
Does the customer leave my store to pay?
No. They enter their account details in the GoCardless form and stay on your site during the payment.
Does it work for pre-orders?
Yes, with WooCommerce Pre-Orders installed, which is acquired separately.
What do I need before starting?
A GoCardless account and an SSL certificate. Also check that your country and currency are covered by the payment method you want to offer.
Is it suitable for any business?
It fits charges of a known, repeated amount: fees, memberships, invoices. If you want an immediate, frictionless payment for one-off purchases, cards are still faster.
