About WooCommerce PDF Watermark

A paid PDF that ends up in another company's group chat

Selling an ebook, a report or a template as a PDF has a problem the shopping cart doesn't solve: the same file, identical for every buyer, gets forwarded, reposted or shared with an entire team, and when it shows up somewhere else there is no way to tell who it came from.

People who sell digital documents often think about blocking the download. But what really changes buyer behavior is the file carrying their name. A PDF with your email and order number printed on every page gets a second thought before being forwarded. WooCommerce PDF Watermark starts from that idea: it doesn't hide the document, it makes it identifiable.

How WooCommerce PDF Watermark works on every download

When the customer downloads the file, the plugin generates a protected copy at that moment. Your original stays untouched in the media library, so you don't prepare a separate file for each order.

  • Text with customer data: name, username, email, order number and date, store name and URL. It also works with guest purchases.
  • Image: your logo or another brand image, with adjustable opacity, alignment and position.
  • Text and image together, if you want both.
  • Text styling: font, size, color, opacity, bold, italic, underline, rotation, uppercase or lowercase, shadows and borders.
  • Preview to check the result before a customer receives it.

Settings per product and variation, and where the mark appears

You set global values for the whole store and override them on specific products: a different text, image, type or rotation. You can also do it per variation, useful if you sell editions, packages or formats from the same product page, or turn the watermark off on a product or variation.

As for pages, you can choose all of them, only the first, only the last, alternate pages, specific ones, or all except specific ones. An 80-page guide doesn't need the same treatment as a one-page template.

Extra layers: password and permissions

You can require a password to open the PDF, either the customer's email or their order number, details they already received. You can also restrict copying, printing, and editing or annotating. Each permission is enabled separately, so a fillable form stays usable if you don't select the form restriction.

Here is the limit to keep in mind: permissions depend on the reader used to open the PDF and are meant to discourage, not to guarantee. No method can fully prevent someone from reproducing the content. The visible watermark deters and helps with tracing, but it is not an absolute blocking system.

Frequently asked questions

Is my original file modified?

No. The watermarked copy is generated on download and the original stays as you uploaded it.

Does it work for EPUB ebooks?

It includes optional EPUB watermarking, designed for stores that sell the same book in PDF and EPUB.

Does it work with other languages and characters?

Yes, with Unicode-compatible fonts such as Arial or DejaVu Sans. If your language or brand requires it, you can upload your own TTF font.

Can I tell whether downloads are being protected?

There is a dashboard with successfully watermarked files, successes and failures, success rate, usage of each watermark type, products with the most activity and recent issues, with filters for today, seven days, 30 days or a custom range.

A badly exported PDF won't be watermarked: test with a trial order

Some documents open fine on a computer but have unusual fonts, encoding or export settings that other software can't process. If one fails, re-export the original as a standard PDF with embedded fonts, upload it again and place a test order to confirm the downloaded copy carries the watermark.

Start with a simple text watermark, check the preview and add a password or permissions only on the products that justify it. If something doesn't fit, the configurable activity log tells you which file is causing trouble.
