An extra option does not reduce stock; a product does

You sell a table and offer the matching chair as an extra. The customer ticks the box, pays, and your inventory still says chairs are left even though none remain.

In Product Add-Ons Ultimate the options of a field carry no stock; if what you offer as an extra can run out, it should be a child product, which does track its inventory.

The plugin adds custom fields to the WooCommerce product page, with more than twenty field types, prices that add or subtract and conditional logic. The Products and Product categories fields use regular WooCommerce products as options, and those child products have their own inventory, SKU, dimensions and tax class.

Fields that are priced and conditioned

• Fields: checkboxes and groups with minimum and maximum, radio buttons, dropdowns, color, image or text swatches, color picker, date with limits and excluded days, number with step, text and textarea with character rules, drag-and-drop file upload, hidden and information fields, and a range slider.
• Prices: free, adding or subtracting; multiplied by quantity or flat-rate; as a value or as a percentage of the base price; per character typed; per uploaded file or with a single fee. With Name Your Price the customer sets the price.
• Calculations: more than 40 functions and operators, with a formula builder that checks what you write. A formula can update the product price, quantity and dimensions.
• Conditions: fields or groups that show or hide depending on other fields, quantity, cost, attributes, chosen variation, login status or role, and they can be chained.
• Display: groups as a list, accordion, tabs, steps or modal window, with a progress bar, tooltips and live validation. The add-to-cart button can stay disabled until required fields are complete.
• Management: global options for specific products, categories or the whole store, field duplication, a group library, CSV import, export between sites and a REST API.

A product with engraved text and a delivery date

One possible combination, which you should test with a trial order before opening it to customers: a text field with some free characters and a charge for each additional one, with a counter of what remains, and a date field that excludes the weekdays on which you do not deliver.

The customer sees on the product page how the price changes, with a summary panel. They can return from the cart, change the values and update the order. Uploaded files can be attached to emails and downloaded in a single zip per order.

Limits and separate pieces

• Lookup tables and Advanced Custom Fields values in calculations depend on the Advanced Calculations extension.
• Cropping and rotating images, and counting the pages of a PDF, depend on the Advanced Uploads extension.
• Showing the customer’s text or image over the product photo requires the Text Preview or Image Preview extensions.
• By default .gif, .jpeg and .png uploads are accepted; other types are chosen from a list.

Uploads take up server space. You can decide when they are deleted, or send them to Amazon S3 or Dropbox.

First steps with the fields

1. Install the plugin with WooCommerce active.
2. Create a global field group or add one to a specific product.
3. Add the fields and mark the required ones, with their default values.
4. Define prices and conditions.
5. Test the product in the store, with the relevant variation and role, and check the cart.
