About WooCommerce Software Addon

Selling software with WooCommerce seems easy until the customer pays and writes asking where their key is, or until you discover that a single key is circulating among ten people. Taking payment is the easy part; the hard part is controlling which license belongs to which order and how many times it has been activated.

An order for software with WooCommerce Software Addon, step by step

The most useful approach is to follow a real sale, because that shows what the plugin solves and where its job ends.

  • You define the product. On the product edit page you mark it as software and adjust its specific properties. The customer buys it like any other item in the store.
  • The order is completed. Once completed, the system automatically generates a license key and includes it in the order email, together with the activation email and the remaining activations.
  • The customer loses the message. This is very common. From the orders screen you can resend the email with the send button WooCommerce already includes.
  • Your application validates the key. This is where the API comes in: it lets you generate keys and activate, deactivate and reset licenses. It has to be integrated into your software or web application.

What you see once the license is sold

In each order you can view and edit the associated licenses, as well as their activations. For keys that are not linked to an order, or to get an overview, there is a list at WooCommerce > License Keys, with bulk deletion if you need to revoke several at once.

There is also a reports page at WooCommerce > Reports > Software with data on software sales and activations. It helps you see what is selling and how much is being activated, not to analyze your customers' behavior inside your application.

Paid upgrades for existing customers

If you release a new version and want to charge for it separately, you can define which previous keys are valid and set a reduced upgrade price. During checkout, the customer enters their license details and gets the discount.

Watch out for activation resets

A negative review from a user points to something you should weigh if your software is high value: according to their analysis, resetting activations through the API does not require a secret code sent from your software, so someone with a key and its email could repeatedly reset activations. This is one buyer's opinion, not a fact verified here, but it is worth testing before trusting it with expensive licenses.

Another, positive review used it to hand out single-use auto-generated licenses, manually and also at checkout, without problems.

Frequently asked questions

When does the customer receive the key?

When the order is marked as completed, in the order-complete email, along with the activation details.

Can I charge for an upgrade to customers with an earlier license?

Yes. You define the accepted previous keys and an upgrade price that is applied at checkout.

Can I validate licenses from my desktop app, plugin or SaaS?

Yes, through the included API, which generates, activates, deactivates and resets licenses. You need to build that integration into your software.

Is it compatible with high-performance order storage (HPOS)?

Yes, it is listed as compatible.

Is it the best option for subscription licenses?

Not necessarily. It is recommended to consider API Manager for WooCommerce first, which is more flexible for most stores.
