About WooCommerce Tree Table Rate Shipping

When shipping eats your margin

A single shipping rate seems enough until someone buys a huge cushion that barely weighs anything, or a very heavy order for a faraway province, and the sale loses you money. Or until a customer with a big cart abandons because they don't understand the cost they see.

Carriers don't charge only for how much a package weighs, but also for the space it takes up. Anyone selling bulky, fragile or heavy items needs rates that reflect that, and the basic WooCommerce settings fall short. WooCommerce Tree Table Rate Shipping is a shipping rule builder: you write the rate tables and the plugin decides which one applies to each cart.

A pottery and cushion order, step by step with Tree Table Rate Shipping

Imagine a store that sells pottery (fragile) and cushions (light but bulky) and ships to several countries. This is how each decision would be handled:

1. Narrow down the destination

You can set rates by country, state or province, and postcode. Postcode lists, ranges and wildcards are supported, and you can include regions, exclude them or both. That way you give a remote area a different rate without multiplying zones.

2. Separate by type of product

The cost can change depending on the shipping class, tags or categories, and you can combine them however you need. Pottery with a fragile shipping class can cost more than the cushions.

3. Choose what gets measured

Charge by weight, by volume or by item count, or by all three at once. For the cushions, volume reflects better what the carrier charges you. You also choose the calculation mode: per item, per product, per class, tag or category, or on the entire order.

4. Cover your costs

You can add a handling fee: a flat amount, a percentage, a percentage of the subtotal or a combination.

5. Let the customer choose

You can offer several delivery options (standard or express, courier, local pickup, fragile shipping, insurance) and show or hide them depending on destination, weight, subtotal and other conditions. It also works for free shipping or a flat rate depending on the subtotal or the destination.

One limit worth being clear about: the plugin applies the rates you define, it doesn't invent them. Its nested tables allow setups from very simple to very fine-grained, but the fine-grained ones require you to think through the structure before building it.

Questions before you set up your rates

Does it replace my FedEx, UPS, DHL or USPS plugin?

Not necessarily. With the external rates tool you enable or disable those plugins depending on conditions, so you can combine two or more shipping methods. What each one calculates still depends on it.

Can I offer free shipping only in some cases?

Yes: free or flat rate depending on the subtotal, the destination or other order attributes.

Is it useful if I ship in boxes of fixed sizes?

There is flat rate box shipping: you list the boxes, envelopes or tubes you use and the plugin tries to fit the order items into them to calculate the cost. It is an attempt at packing, so test it in the demo with mixed carts before relying on it.

Does it save me development work if I build stores for clients?

If you used to program custom shipping methods for clients' stores, many of those cases can now be solved with rules, without writing code.

When you don't need this plugin

If you sell a few products of similar size and a fixed or per-zone rate covers your margin, you don't need a rule builder. Tree Table Rate Shipping pays off when your catalog mixes weights, volumes and destinations, or when you already have several shipping plugins and want to bring them together in one, since it can replace several methods at once.
