About WP Ultimo WordPress Plugin
First things first: this plugin is no longer maintained by its author
Before anything else, because it changes the decision. WP Ultimo stopped receiving updates from its original developer in late 2023, and by early 2026 its website and support channels had gone quiet. The commercial version is discontinued.
The project is not dead: the community, with former developers among them, carried it on as an open-source fork, first called WP Multisite WaaS and later Multisite Ultimate. It is in the WordPress repository. If you are starting something new, that is where to look.
What it does, so we know what we are talking about
WP Ultimo turns a WordPress multisite network into a subscription website business, in the style of Wix or Squarespace but under your brand. The customer signs up, picks a plan, and within minutes has their own site inside your network.
The parts of the system
- Plans and subscriptions, with recurring billing through PayPal and Stripe.
- Site templates, so the customer picks a starting point when signing up.
- Custom domains, so each customer can point their own at their site in your network.
- Per-plan limits, on storage, visits, users or available plugins according to what they pay.
Why maintenance matters more here than with other plugins
A discontinued plugin on a blog is a risk you can live with. This one is not on a blog: it sits at the centre of a multisite network, handling sign-ups, recurring payments and your customers' billing data.
When a security flaw appears, there will be no official patch. When WordPress or the gateways change something, there will be nobody to adapt it. And the ones who suffer the outage are not just you, they are every business hosted in your network. If you are going to use it anyway, do it as a considered decision and with a written migration plan.
Who it is for
Agencies wanting to sell websites by subscription rather than by project, vertical niches (sites for dentists, for gyms, for restaurants) and anyone already running a multisite network who needs to understand this system.
