About WPC Linked Variation for WooCommerce

When each color is a separate product and the customer has no idea

In WooCommerce, variations live inside a single product. But many stores don't work that way: the same model in another color or size has its own page, its own SKU and, sometimes, a different product type (a bundle, a grouped product, a composite). The customer sees the same item and, to switch variants, has to go back to the listing and look for it.

WPC Linked Variation for WooCommerce solves exactly that: it connects independent products through shared attributes and shows them on each page as variation swatches. Shoppers compare variants, not pages; if moving from one to another means leaving the page, the comparison becomes more awkward than it needs to be.

WPC Linked Variation swatches link products, they don't merge them

Each product remains a separate product, managed on its own. The plugin only adds the visual and navigation layer that ties them together:

  • Configurable position: you choose where the linked variations appear on each product page.
  • Swatch style: they look like the swatches of a regular variable product.
  • Shortcode: it lets you show them anywhere else on the site.
  • Three ways to open the product: in a new tab, in the same tab or in a Quick View popup.
  • Mixed types: you can link products of several types, for example a bundle, a grouped product and a composite from the WPC plugins.

What it doesn't do: it doesn't turn your products into a single variable product or create one selector with a single buy button for the whole group. Each swatch leads to its own product. Also, the Quick View integration is with WPC Smart Quick View, a separate plugin; without it, you are left with the new tab or same tab options.

Common questions about linking products

Do I need to know how to code?

No. You create one or more shared attributes, configure their terms and then adjust how the swatches are displayed.

Can I link products of different types?

Yes, it is one of its strengths: you can visually group products of several types even though each one is still managed separately.

Does it work for a store in several languages?

It is translatable, so it can be used on multilingual sites.

Will it work with my theme?

It is compatible with most WooCommerce themes and plugins. Even so, check in the demo how the swatches look and make sure they fit the design of your product page.

Can I keep using plugins that only work at product level?

Yes. Many plugins work only at product level and not with variations; since here each product stays independent, you can keep using them and link the products to each other.

Categories, tags or attributes: where the products in the group come from

To decide which products appear as linked variations you can start from categories, tags or attributes. This is useful if your catalog is already organized: instead of linking one by one, you use the classification that already exists. If your catalog is messy, it's best to fix it first, because the swatches will reflect that mess.

Create the shared attribute before touching any product

The plugin relies on shared attributes: without them there is nothing to link. Before configuring anything, decide which attribute tells your products apart (color, size, format) and define its terms consistently across the catalog.

Then assign that attribute to each product with its corresponding term and configure how the swatches are displayed. Try a small group first and check the position, the behavior on click and how it looks on mobile before extending it to the rest of the store.
