About WPC Smart Fees for WooCommerce (Premium)

Fees do not annoy people: finding out late does

Extra costs appearing at the end of checkout, shipping, taxes and fees, are the most cited reason for cart abandonment. The Baymard Institute has measured it for years and it always comes out on top: close to four in ten people who abandon do so for that reason.

The interesting part of that figure is what it does not say. It does not say people leave because the fee is expensive. They leave because the price they have been carrying in their head for ten minutes changed right as they were about to pay, and that feels like a trap even when it is not.

A fee plugin is therefore a double edged tool. Used well it lets you charge what an order genuinely costs you. Used badly, it turns your checkout into the place where surprises live.

What it does

  • Independent rules, evaluated on every cart update, with a fixed or percentage fee on subtotal or total.
  • Negative fees, meaning discounts, with protection so the total cannot fall below zero.
  • Taxable or not, decided rule by rule.
  • Cart conditions: subtotal, total, item count, quantity, weight and number of distinct products.
  • Product conditions: specific products, categories, tags and shipping classes.
  • Customer conditions: previous orders, total spent, role, email and whether they are logged in.
  • Place and timing conditions: country, state, postcode, IP geolocation, applied coupon, shipping and payment method, dates, days of the week and time ranges.

Where charging a fee makes sense

The cases with a clear justification are easy to defend to a customer. The small order that does not cover preparation. Cash on delivery, which has a real cost. Weekend or out of hours delivery. The area that costs more to reach. Special packaging for fragile goods.

In all of them the customer understands the why as soon as they read it, and that is the key: a fee with a clear name is not perceived as a trick. Which is why the custom notice you can show when the rule applies is not decoration, it is half the job.

The ones that cause trouble are those you cannot explain in one sentence. If justifying a fee takes you a paragraph, that amount probably belongs in the product price.

The golden rule: show it before the last step

If you have fees that will apply almost always, mention them on the product page or in the cart, not only at checkout. You lose the low price feeling, and you gain the orders that currently drop on the last click.

And if you sell to consumers in the European Union, the total price including everything unavoidable has to be clear before the buyer commits. Avoidable fees, like choosing cash on delivery, are a different matter, but showing those early helps too.

Requirements and what it does not do

It needs WooCommerce. Rules can be duplicated, reordered by dragging and exported or imported as JSON to move them to another shop.

It does not change product prices: it adds amounts in the cart. If what you want is a product costing differently depending on the customer, those are pricing rules and a different tool.

It also does not decide for you when to show the fee. It can apply it and announce it in the cart, but whether your customer finds out early or late is still your call.

Alternatives in the catalogue

If the fee has to be tied to a field the customer fills in, for example engraved text charged per character, the natural fit is WPC Checkout Field Editor, which already does that calculation.

If what you are after is raising average order value rather than covering costs, that is different ground: UpsellWP or the checkout upsell funnel. And for rule based shipping rates, Flexible Shipping.

Frequently asked questions

Can I create discounts and not only fees?
Yes, with negative amounts, and there is protection so the total cannot fall below zero.

Can several conditions be combined?
Yes, with AND and OR, groupable, across cart, product, customer, location, payment, shipping and timing.

Does the customer see why they are being charged?
If you write it, yes. A custom notice can be shown when the rule applies, and it should always be used.

Do several fees stack at once?
By default yes, and there is an option to skip a rule if others already applied.

Is the fee taxable?
You decide rule by rule.

Can I move the rules to another shop?
Yes, by exporting and importing JSON.
