About WPDM - Google Drive
Heavy files eat your hosting bandwidth
Distributing or selling PDFs, templates, videos or resource bundles from WordPress has a problem you don't notice until things start working: every download comes from your server. WPDM - Google Drive moves that weight to your Google Drive account: the file lives there and your site only manages the download package.
It is an add-on for WordPress Download Manager, so it does not work on its own: you need that plugin installed, because the Drive file is attached to a download package.
WPDM - Google Drive attaches files one by one, not whole folders
When you create or edit a package, a "Google Drive" button appears next to the attach-file box. You log in, see your files and pick the one you want. You can also upload files to Drive from there and handle everything from the admin panel, with the free 15 GB of a Google account. Before buying, it helps to be clear about these limits:
- One file at a time: you cannot select a whole folder or bring in its directory structure. To share folders, the developer points to its Dropbox add-on together with WPDM Pro.
- Public by hand: the file must be shared as public in Drive to be downloadable, and Drive does not let you mark it that way automatically.
- Packages with several files: WPDM can only compress files that are on your server. With Drive files the zip comes out empty. Upload a ready-made zip to Drive or offer the files separately.
- No folder filter: when attaching, you see whatever the account you log in with contains. If each client should only see their own files, you can log in with different Google accounts when attaching.
Common questions before connecting your Drive
Can I sell a whole folder?
No. Downloads work at file level. If you want to sell a set, upload a zip to Drive and attach it as a single file.
Can my users upload files from their own Drive?
Yes, from the frontend. This uses the frontend uploader of WordPress Download Manager.
Do I have to make every file public?
Yes, to be downloadable it must be shared as public, and you have to do it manually in Drive.
I get a redirect_uri_mismatch or invalid_client error, what is going on?
It usually means the redirect URI or the Google credentials do not match what is configured. Copy the exact values from the plugin settings and check that no step is missing.
Setting up WPDM - Google Drive takes two APIs and three Google keys
The connection is not one click: you create a project in Google API Console and enable Google Drive API and Google Picker API. Forgetting the second one is a frequent cause of errors when opening the picker. Then you set up the consent screen (while the app is in development mode, add the Gmail addresses of the people who will use it) and create an OAuth client ID and an API key.
In the OAuth client ID, the redirect URI and the authorized JavaScript origins must match those of your site; you can copy them from Download Manager settings, under Cloud Storage, in the Google Drive credentials panel. Paste the Client ID, Client Secret and API Key there, save, and you will be able to log in from a new package and grant consent.
