About WPForms Post Submissions Addon
Whoever submits an article cannot fix it afterward
You open a form so your readers can propose articles or listings and someone writes to you because a typo slipped in. Once the form is sent, the fix goes through you.
The person who submits the form cannot edit their entry afterward: only users with access to the WordPress dashboard update it. That is why you decide from the start whether that person submits once or holds a role that gives them access.
Post Submissions is the WPForms add-on that turns form submissions into WordPress posts. It was designed so users could submit blog articles, and it now also serves for listings, testimonials or galleries. Each form is assigned a content type, a status and an author.
How a submission becomes a post
- Mapped fields: the post's title, content, excerpt and featured image are linked to form fields.
- Content type: the submission is saved as a post, a page or another content type.
- Status: draft, pending review or published. It is not published automatically unless you choose that status.
- Author: a fixed registered user for all submissions, or the current user when the submitter is logged in.
- Categories: a dropdown or choice field is fed with the site's categories.
- Custom fields: you enter the key of each custom field and choose the form field that fills it.
The form can be open to any visitor or limited to logged-in users. Payment gateways such as Stripe, Square, PayPal and Authorize.Net can also be connected to charge for a submission.
A form for article proposals
One way to start: begin with the post submission form template and leave the status on draft or pending review. Add a rich text field for the content, a file upload for the featured image and a dropdown with the categories. It is only a starting point; change it to fit what you publish.
What the form does not solve
Besides the lack of later editing, there is one detail about content: iframe code for embedding videos does not work inside the rich text field.
Custom fields will show on the published post only if your theme knows how to display them or you adapt it. The add-on stores them, but it does not decide how they look.
Among its features there is no panel where the submitter reviews or changes what they sent.
Getting it running
You need WPForms installed at its latest version and the add-on activated. To get started:
- Create a new form or open an existing one.
- Add the fields for author, title, content, featured image, excerpt and category.
- Open Settings, go to the Post Submissions tab and turn on Enable Post Submissions.
- Map the fields, choose the content type, the status and the author, and add custom fields if you use them.
- Save your changes before leaving the builder.
Different ways to receive content
If you use Ninja Forms, there is Front-end Posting for publishing from the site. For a blog approach with submission from the web, check User Blog Front-end Post Submission.
