What an SEO plugin can do and what it cannot
Worth starting here, because it is where most money gets wasted in this field. Yoast does not rank your site. No plugin does. What it does is stop you making the technical mistakes that prevent ranking, and organise the work so nothing slips through.
That distinction matters: a green light on an article does not mean it will come first, it means you have completed a checklist. Writing to make it turn green, repeating the keyphrase until the counter is satisfied, is the commonest way to write worse and rank the same.
The feature that genuinely justifies the paid version
The redirect manager. When you change a page's address or delete it, Yoast Premium spots it and offers to create the redirect there and then.
It looks like a minor detail and it is not. A page that spent years receiving visits and starts returning a not found error drops out of the results and takes every link pointing to it with it. And the worst part is that nobody notices: no alarm goes off, the visits simply stop arriving. On a site with history, this alone pays for the plugin.
What else it adds
- Internal linking suggestions as you write, with the pages on the site that fit.
- Orphaned content: finds the pages no internal link points to.
- Up to five keyphrases per piece, with synonyms and word forms.
- Assisted titles and descriptions, generated for you to review before publishing.
- Social preview, to see how the link looks when shared before publishing.
It also includes the local, video and news SEO plugins, which used to be bought separately.
Two practical warnings
Never two SEO plugins at once. Yoast and Rank Math do the same job, and having both active produces duplicate tags and conflicting sitemaps. If you migrate from one to the other, import the settings and deactivate the previous one rather than leaving it just in case.
The free version already does the essentials. Titles, descriptions, sitemap, structured data and canonicals are all in the free one. If your site has twenty pages that never change address, the paid version adds little. If it has a thousand and you move them, it adds a lot.

Not on its own. It prevents technical mistakes and organises the work, but content and links are what rank.
