About (BuddyDev) BP Deactivate Account

Leaving the community without deleting anything: what BP Deactivate Account does

In your own social network, sooner or later someone writes: "I want to leave, but I don't want to lose everything". Without an in-between option, you're left with two bad exits: deleting the account (and with it what the member built) or leaving it visible even though the person wants to disappear.

BP Deactivate Account adds that in-between option to BuddyPress: users deactivate their account from their profile settings and, whenever they want, reactivate it without losing their data. A community doesn't only lose members when they leave for good: many step away for a while, out of fatigue, for privacy or after a conflict. If leaving is reversible, it's easier for them to come back.

What happens to a deactivated account

While the account is inactive, the member disappears from everyone else's view:

  • Their activities are hidden from all users.
  • Their profile is hidden from all users.
  • They can't send or receive friendship requests or messages.
  • They can't perform any action until their account is active again.
  • If you enable it as an administrator, they can't log in either.

That last point opens a second use: the plugin also works as a tool to block a specific user's access without deleting them.

Admin control: logouts, emails and API

You decide how much freedom to give. You can let users manage their own account or keep that decision for your team; as an administrator you can deactivate and reactivate accounts, and the panel lets you filter and update statuses.

  • Automatic logout: on deactivation, the user is logged out of all their devices and sessions.
  • Reactivation on login: an option so the account activates itself when the user logs in.
  • Email notices: notifications to administrators and users when an account is activated or deactivated.
  • Translatable: the plugin is ready to be translated.

If you work with a developer, there's a simple API to mark an account as active or inactive and check its status (for example with bp_account_deactivator()), and CSS classes are added to the body depending on the status of the logged-in user and of the profile being viewed, so you can style those cases.

Reversible pause or block? Decide before enabling BP Deactivate Account

If you need to erase a member's information, this is no substitute, and you shouldn't take it as a guarantee of compliance with any data protection regulation. It also depends on BuddyPress and requires the Settings component to be enabled. It also works with BuddyBoss Platform.

Does the user lose their data when deactivating?

No. When the account is reactivated, they get back what they had.

Can an administrator deactivate another member?

Yes, and reactivate them too. With the blocking option, that user won't be able to log in.

Is the session closed on deactivation?

Only if you enable that option; in that case it's closed on all devices.

Does it send email notices?

It can notify administrators and users, depending on how you configure it.

Does it work without BuddyPress?

No: it's designed for social networks based on BuddyPress.
