Opening comments on your photos is hiring a job, not switching on a feature

The idea is good and the effect is real: a gallery where people can comment on each image stops being a display case and becomes a conversation. The visitor stays longer, comes back to see whether anyone replied, and those replies are content you did not have to write.

What almost never gets said is the other half. The moment you let other people write under your images, you have taken on a daily commitment: reading what they write, deciding what stays, and replying. That never ends while the gallery is published.

So the question before installing is not whether you like the feature. It is whether you will still be there in six months, because an abandoned gallery with comments fills up with rubbish and looks worse than one without them.

Where it pays off and where it does not

It pays off when the conversation is the product. A photography community where critique is what adds value. A project gallery where clients ask about materials and lead times. A contest where commenting is participation.

It also pays off in visual catalogues where questions repeat: if ten people ask the same thing under the same photo, you have your answer written once and visible to the next ten.

It does not pay off in a decorative gallery. If your images are there to make the page look good, opening comments adds a surface to moderate with nobody having anything to say. And it does not pay off on a low traffic portfolio either: zero comments under every photo reads as abandonment.

What to have sorted before opening them

Three things, and the plugin solves none of them for you.

Prior moderation. WordPress can hold comments until approved, and on images it is worth having that on from the start: taking something down after publication is worse than approving it beforehand.

The data policy. A comment stores the name, email and IP address of whoever writes it. If you serve European Union residents, that has to be covered in your privacy notice, and those people can ask you to delete it.

And who replies. A comment left unanswered for a month is a worse signal than none, because it proves there is nobody on the other side. If you will not be able to reply within a reasonable time, better not to open them.

Requirements and what it does not do
