About GamiPress Leaderboards Addon

A leaderboard without dates is won by whoever arrived first

You open a leaderboard in your community and at first it works: everyone checks their position and tries to climb. Months go by and the same names stay on top, because they have been accumulating for longer. Someone joining today sees an impossible gap and stops looking at the board.

A cumulative ranking rewards seniority. What gives the competition back to newcomers is the cutoff date: on a this-week board, everyone has a chance again. GamiPress Leaderboards adds configurable leaderboards to GamiPress, and its period setting is the decision most worth thinking through.

Who competes and for how long

  • Metrics: points, achievements and ranks, whichever you choose to order users.
  • Periods: today, yesterday, current week, month or year and their past equivalents.
  • Your own dates: a custom period with a start and end, useful for a specific challenge. If you leave one date blank, it only filters by the other end.
  • No period: the default option, which ranks by what has been earned so far.
  • Size: maximum users ranked and users per page. With zero, it ranks everyone or removes pagination.
  • Exclusions: hide administrators and users without earnings.

The sum that decides the position

If you choose several metrics, they combine into a single score, and each one contributes its value as is: achievements contribute the number earned, points contribute the current balance and ranks contribute the priority value of the current rank. A user with 32 achievements, 500 points and priority 3 scores 535.

In that case points weigh far more than the rest, because the figure is larger. If you want rank to count, you can space out your rank priorities, 100 apart instead of 1 apart. Rank can also decide the order when two users tie on achievements and points.

Since the points metric uses the balance, check what happens on your site if users spend points: test a case before announcing the leaderboard.

How the table looks and where it goes

  • Columns: chosen separately from the metrics and reordered by dragging. You can merge avatar and name, adjust the avatar size or show a column with the total sum.
  • Interaction: search and sorting by column without reloading the page.
  • Large tables: cache with a duration in hours and manual refresh, plus configurable lazy loading.
  • Placement: [gamipress_leaderboard] shortcode, Gutenberg block or widget.
  • Own position: [gamipress_leaderboard_user_position] shortcode and its widget to show a user's position.

Setting up a challenge with a closing date

This add-on needs GamiPress and works with the points, achievements and ranks you have defined there: it ranks what already exists, so the ways to earn them must be configured first. The leaderboard is created like a post, from the Leaderboards submenu in GamiPress.

  1. Create a leaderboard and choose a single metric to begin with.
  2. Select a period, for example the current month.
  3. Set the number of users and hide administrators.
  4. Choose the visible columns and turn on search.
  5. Publish it with the shortcode or block, and add the user position.
  6. If the list grows, enable the cache and decide how many hours pass between refreshes.

Pieces that pair with the leaderboard

In communities with groups, BuddyPress Group Leaderboard is a separate add-on that adds a tab with the ranking of the group members, and it requires this add-on. GamiPress Referrals rewards referred visits, registrations and sales, and those points can enter the table. BuddyBoss Notifications brings GamiPress alerts to BuddyBoss notifications. If you want to rank affiliates, without GamiPress, AffiliateWP Leaderboard publishes a list of your best affiliates.

Four settings that raise questions

Can I have a weekly board and an all-time one?

Yes. Periods are configured per leaderboard, and each one has its own display options.

How does it order users if I pick points and achievements?

The values add up into a single score, and the highest wins.

Can a user see their position without searching?

Yes, with the user position shortcode or widget.

Does it hold up with large leaderboards?

It has a built-in cache and configurable lazy loading, meant to reduce load time on large tables.
