About GetPaid > Paid Trials

If your product delivers on day one, a free trial gives it away

You offer seven free days because that is what everyone does. Someone signs up, downloads the reports they needed, looks up your data or uses your service in depth, and cancels before the first charge. Your trial just did the product's job, and you collected nothing.

A free trial reduces the buyer's risk, but it rests on an assumption: that value builds up over time. When the full value arrives on entry, giving away access amounts to giving away the product. Paid Trials adds a third way to GetPaid between free access and the full price: charging a reduced amount for a short period before the regular price begins.

Two formulas that push in opposite directions

The add-on offers two ways to adjust the first payment of a subscription, and they are worth keeping apart:

  • Paid trial. The first period costs less than the following ones: a reduced amount for a few days and then the regular monthly fee. It lowers the entry barrier.
  • Higher signup fee. A fixed amount is added to the initial price, and the recurring fee is charged after that. It raises the entry barrier and brings revenue forward.

The first helps more people try the product. The second works the other way around. If your question is how to get people in, look at the first; if it is how to get paid for the work of the first days, look at the second.

When charging for a trial makes sense

The clear case is a service that delivers a lot in a few clicks and lets people take the result away: exportable data, reports or any material the customer saves on their computer. With a free trial, some users might abuse it; with a paid trial, whoever does not continue at least leaves a small income in exchange for what they took.

If your product needs weeks of use to prove its worth, the logic changes, and GetPaid's free trial may be enough. That option is already part of the main plugin, with configurable duration, and does not require this add-on. This add-on covers one specific need: putting a price on the trial period.

Only for what renews

The paid trial pattern fits ongoing subscriptions, not one-time items with permanent access. If you sell a single download or a one-off service, there is no regular price to move to after the trial.

It does not solve the sales message either. Explaining clearly what is charged today, what will be charged later and when remains your job, both on the page and on the payment form. Review it before publishing.

Setting it up on your GetPaid install

You need GetPaid active and a gateway that handles recurring payments, such as PayPal Standard, Stripe, Mollie or Authorize.Net. Then follow these steps:

  1. Activate the add-on on your GetPaid install.
  2. Open Add New Item and tick the recurring charge in the item details.
  3. Set the regular price and the maximum renewals, if you want to limit them.
  4. Configure the trial amount or the signup fee.
  5. Make a test purchase and check the first charge and the first renewal in your gateway.

Collecting those renewals or changing platform

For your payments inside GetPaid, Square Payments supports recurring payments on subscription items. Mollie Payments is another gateway for the same plugin, and it also handles recurring billing.

If your business already lives in WooCommerce, WooCommerce Subscriptions lets you combine a free trial and a signup fee on the same product.

Trials, fees and gateways in practice

Do I need the add-on to offer a free trial?

No. GetPaid includes free trials of configurable duration on recurring items.

Does it work on a one-time payment?

It is meant for ongoing subscriptions, not one-time items.

What is the difference between a paid trial and a signup fee?

The trial reduces the initial price for a short period. The fee adds a fixed amount to the first payment.

Does it work with any gateway?

Recurring billing depends on the gateway. Choose one with subscriptions and test a full purchase.

Can I limit renewals?

Yes. GetPaid recurring items accept a maximum number of renewals.
