About GravityCharts
The chart you are asked for in June is decided the day you build the form
Someone asks for the survey summary and the key question turns out to be a free text field, with hundreds of answers saying the same thing in different ways. So you export, clean by hand and build the chart in a spreadsheet. The next month, again.
GravityCharts avoids that cycle, but with a condition worth knowing before you collect data: a chart groups entries by the choices of a field, so whatever did not come in as a choice cannot be grouped. Report quality is set when the form is designed, months before you open the chart editor.
If an answer is going to appear in a report, it should be a drop-down, radio buttons or checkboxes: a free text field is not among the fields for grouping.
Chart types and calculations on your entries
- Types: line, area, bar, column, pie, doughnut, polar area and radar.
- Fields for grouping: Drop Down, Multi Select, Radio Buttons and Checkboxes, plus the same types in the Survey, Quiz and Polls add-ons.
- Calculation: entry count, sum, average, maximum or minimum. Apart from the count, these also ask you to pick a data field.
- By date: Show on Timeline mode plots entries over time.
- Filters: conditional logic with a preview that follows the conditions as you add them, relative dates and restricting results to the logged-in user.
- Technical base: built on Chart.js, with hooks and filters for those who code.
From the WordPress editor to email and PDF
On a page. With the GravityCharts block or the [gravitycharts] shortcode. Security is on by default for each chart and limits where it displays.
Next to a data table. With GravityView, a widget places the chart in a View, and it updates when scrolling and paging data with DataTables.
Outside the browser. A regular chart is output with JavaScript and needs a browser to appear, which an email or a PDF does not offer. That is why there is a static image mode, which produces a PNG. In Gravity Forms notifications it goes in with the {gravitycharts} merge tag.
In a PDF. You need Gravity PDF, an HTML field on the form, Show HTML Fields enabled and embed_type="image" in the shortcode.
Three questions a chart does not answer
Comparing two forms. Each chart belongs to one form and shows only its entries. If the same survey lives in two forms, you get two separate charts.
Several series on the same axes. Multiple fields cannot be plotted on one set of axes, so a comparison of that kind does not fit in a single image.
The detail of one entry. Charts work with all entries or with a subset defined by filters, never with a single entry.
Setting up your first chart with Gravity Forms
You need WordPress with Gravity Forms and a form with a choice field and entries. GravityView, Gravity PDF and the Survey add-on are only needed for their specific uses. Then:
- In the form editor, open Settings, then GravityCharts, and click Add New.
- Name the chart and choose the type.
- Set Data Type, Data Source and Data Operation, plus Data Field if the calculation asks for it.
- Adjust colors, design, title, axes and labels, and save with Save Settings.
- Insert the GravityCharts block on a page and select the form and the chart.
Other pieces for Gravity Forms data
If you need the figure rather than the picture, GravityMath runs calculations on entries to display totals and averages. To show the entries themselves, GravityView displays them on the public side of the site.
If the report is worked on outside WordPress, GravityExport takes entries to Excel, CSV, PDF or Google Sheets. And if you prefer a table, the wpDataTables integration turns each field into a column and each entry into a row.
Questions when charting Gravity Forms entries
Does it work without Gravity Forms?
No. Its data is Gravity Forms entries, and that is a separate plugin.
Can I show each user only their own data?
Yes. Results can be restricted based on the logged-in user.
Does it work for surveys and personality quizzes?
Yes, survey results can be charted, including Gravity Forms personality quizzes.
