About LearnPress - Export/Import Courses
When importing a course, overwriting depends on its identifier
You prepare a course on your test site, rename it before finishing, export it and import it on the real site choosing to overwrite. You expect it to replace the old course, and it is not clear which of the two will remain.
In LearnPress Export Import, a course is only overwritten if it shares an identifier with an existing one; before choosing that option, use a rehearsal course to check which ones it treats as the same.
The addon exports LearnPress courses to .zip or .json files, restores them from those files and also imports courses from Tutor LMS. It serves for course backups, for moving a course from one site to another and for passing content from a production site to a test one.
What travels and how it moves
- Course data: name, description, featured image and status.
- Structure: the sections of the course.
- Content: lessons, quizzes and questions, with embedded content such as videos, text and attachments.
- Formats: .zip and .json.
- Import: you choose between overwriting existing courses or creating new ones.
- Upload: you drag the file onto the import screen.
- Process: select the file, confirm the information and import.
- Warnings: the addon shows notifications and warnings if the file format is not valid.
Importing from Tutor LMS turns courses from that plugin directly into LearnPress courses.
A course rehearsed on one site and published on another
One possible flow, which you should test with a trial course before using it with real ones: you finish a course in a development environment, export it to a file and import it on the production site with the option to create a new one. With that option the real course that already exists is not touched.
The reverse path also works: you export a course from the live site and import the file on a test site to rehearse changes away from the live site. Before a big overhaul, an exported file also serves as a copy of the course you can restore.
Checks before importing
- Overwriting acts when the course shares an identifier with the one that already exists.
- The supported formats are .zip and .json; other files are rejected with a warning.
- The detail of what travels is limited to course, sections, lessons, quizzes and questions with their content. If you need to bring students, enrollments or settings, test first with a rehearsal course.
- With very large courses, rehearse first with one of a similar size.
First steps to export and import
- Install the addon on both sites, with LearnPress active on both.
- On the source site, choose the courses and export them to .zip or .json.
- On the destination site, open the import screen and drag in the file.
- Confirm the information the addon shows.
- Choose whether to overwrite or create new courses, import and review the result.
Alternatives for moving courses
The base plugin is LearnPress. If you come from another course system, look at Tutor LMS Pro, which this addon knows how to import from.
To move WordPress content in general, there are WP All Import Pro and WP All Export Pro.
