About Meta Box Builder
Custom fields without making the project depend on whoever coded them
Sites with their own data (property listings, directories, catalogs) often start with fields written in a hurry in functions.php. Months later nobody remembers what each one does, and the client asks for a new one. Meta Box Builder takes that definition out of the code and puts it on a screen in the admin: you drag the field types, arrange them and configure them without writing a line.
There are more than 40 field types, and every Meta Box field and parameter is supported. It is an extension of the Meta Box plugin, so it builds on top of it. If you know how to create a menu in the WordPress admin, you will understand the way it works.
Meta Box Builder generates the PHP and the final site can do without it
While you configure, the builder generates the code as you go. When you are done, you copy it and paste it into the child theme's functions.php on another site. You don't need to activate the builder there: the Meta Box plugin is enough, and it adds no settings screens. You can take the same fields to as many sites as you want, or vary them on each one. You can also import and export field groups from the admin itself.
For each box and each field you define location, priority, context and conditional logic, so they only appear where and when they should.
Gutenberg blocks and ready-made code to display fields in your theme
The builder also creates Gutenberg blocks: you define the settings with the interface and write the block template inside the builder itself. It is all PHP, with no need to set up React or Webpack.
It also generates the code to get and display each field's values, with variants for different situations. You copy it into your theme or plugin and skip searching for functions in the documentation. If you need a new control, there is an API to extend the builder with your own field types.
Before deciding if Meta Box Builder is enough: which extensions your project will ask for
The builder doesn't work on its own: it needs Meta Box, and several features depend on specific extensions:
- Group-type fields: the MB Group extension.
- Relationships between content and settings pages: the MB Settings Page extension.
- Showing or hiding fields with conditional logic: the corresponding extensions.
- Gutenberg blocks: the MB Blocks extension enabled.
- Custom post types and taxonomies: the Custom Post Type extension.
Front-end user profile forms are handled by a different extension (MB User Profile).
Do I need to know PHP?
To define fields, no. To display them in the theme you paste the code the builder itself generates.
Does it have to stay installed on the final site?
No, if you export the configuration to PHP: on the destination site you only need the Meta Box plugin.
Does it work with Divi or Beaver Builder?
It connects to those page builders through separate integration extensions (MB Divi Integration and MB Beaver Builder Integration).
Can I create custom post types?
Yes, by combining the builder with the Custom Post Type extension, which also covers taxonomies.
