About myCred Reset Points
A points balance is a promise, and this button cancels it
Your points program has been running for months and the time has come to start again: the season ends, you change the rules, or you finished testing with a group of users. Correcting account by account is not an option, so you look for a way to bring everything to zero.
The technical part is simple. The important part comes first: to whoever earned them, those points are theirs. Every balance is a commitment to a person, and a poorly scoped reset reaches people it should not, all at once.
myCred Reset Points adds to myCred the ability to reset points with one click. Its real value lies in what it lets you choose before clicking: which roles and which point types enter the operation.
How each reset is scoped
- By user role. You can select all roles or only some.
- Roles from other plugins. The list shows existing roles, including those created by third-party plugins.
- By point type. You can reset default or custom types, such as Points, Chips or Coins.
- By user. A person's profile shows the option to choose their point types and click Reset.
The filters add up: if your users hold activity points and chips for another purpose, tick only the type you want to bring to zero.
Clearing one person or clearing a group
The profile reset is for one-off cases, such as a test account or a balance you want to redo. It affects that user's points and logs, and only for the selected types. Before clicking, keep in mind that the account's history changes too.
The role reset is the tool for closing a stage or clearing a whole group. Before using it on your real site, test on a copy what happens to balances and to the transaction log.
Your copy, before you click
Because the operation acts on what your users already hold, prepare a way back with myCred's own tools:
- Export the history in Raw format. Entries go out to a CSV exactly as they are in the database. The Formatted format does not work as a backup.
- Keep the balance importer in mind. From a CSV it can set each user's balance to the value in the file or add that amount to what they hold.
- Also make a full copy of the site, to roll back everything else.
Tell your users ahead of time as well, and explain what will change in their balances.
From the zip to the first controlled reset
You need myCred installed and active, because this add-on extends its points and does not work alone. Then:
- Upload the zip under Plugins, Add New, and activate it.
- Go to the myCred settings and open the Reset Points section.
- Choose all roles or the ones that apply.
- Tick the point types you want to reset.
- Run the reset and check the balance of several users.
When resetting is not the best way out
If your problem is that some users earn points too quickly, myCred Level Cred gives more control over hooks, by role, rank or badge level. If you want to reward users for coming back regularly, myCred Time Based Reward creates rewards that are claimed after a set time.
And if you are after competitions by period, GamiPress Leaderboards offers leaderboards with a period, though it belongs to GamiPress, a different gamification system.
How the reset responds in each case
Does it work without myCred?
No. It is a myCred add-on.
Can I reset only subscribers?
Yes. Select that role and leave the rest out.
Does it recognize roles created by another plugin?
Yes. The list also includes roles created by third-party plugins.
Can I keep one point type and clear another?
Yes. The reset applies to the types you tick.
Is the user's history deleted?
From the profile, the reset covers their points and logs. For the role reset, check it on a copy.
How do I verify the result?
Review users' balances after the reset, both those included in the selection and those who were not.
