About One Click Spam Marker for BuddyPress
In a BuddyPress community, spam is rarely an attack; it is more like a leak: fake accounts that show up every week, profiles with odd links, members who sneak into groups. What wears an administrator down is not the spammer itself but the route to remove it: leaving what you were looking at, going to the dashboard, finding the user and editing it. When cleaning takes that many steps, it gets postponed, and what is postponed piles up.
Flag the spammer where you see them, not where WordPress manages them
One Click Spam Marker for BuddyPress adds a button to mark a user as a spammer without leaving the screen where you spotted them. The action runs over ajax, so the page does not reload. For anyone reviewing the members directory one by one, that means carrying on down the list instead of losing your place every time you clean up an account.
Three places where the One Click Spam Marker button appears
- Members directory: to mark users from the list itself.
- A group's members list: to mark a user from the group itself.
- User profile: if the profile is not yet flagged, you will see the button to flag it; if it already is, you will see the button to reverse it.
The unmark button also exists in the group members list, so fixing a mistake is as quick as making one. And mistakes will happen: a new user with a link in their bio is not always a spammer.
What happens to the account after the click
When a user is marked, their session is forced to close, so they do not stay logged in with an account that has already been flagged.
If your installation is not multisite, you can also reverse the flag from the user's edit screen in the dashboard by unchecking the spammer box. It is an alternative route in case you prefer to review from there.
By default, the button is only visible to site administrators and super administrators. If you want a trusted moderator to use it too, the capability can be delegated to other roles, but it takes a code filter.
Is One Click Spam Marker enough for your community, or do you need to stop spam before it gets in?
It is a manual cleanup tool, fast and very specific. If your problem is hundreds of automated sign-ups a day, you will also need something that blocks them at registration (captcha, registration validation or similar). This plugin does not do that: it acts once the spammer is already in and someone has noticed.
Nor is it a moderation panel with queues, reports or risk scores. It is a button, well placed, and it does that without adding anything else. It needs BuddyPress active, because it is an add-on to it and does not work on its own.
Can my moderators use it?
Not out of the box: only administrators and super administrators see the button. Delegating it to other roles requires adding a code filter.
Can a flag be undone by mistake?
Yes. On the profile and in the group members list there is a button to remove the flag. On non-multisite installations you can also do it from the user's edit screen in the dashboard.
Does the page reload when flagging?
No, the action runs over ajax.
Does it block automated spam sign-ups?
No. It is for manually flagging people who have already registered; to stop mass sign-ups you need another tool.
