About Paid Memberships Pro - BuddyPress & BuddyBoss Add On

Building a community on WordPress is easy. Deciding who gets into what is the hard part: who can post in groups, who can only read, who can send private messages, and what happens to the user who registered without paying. If you don't define it, your community fills up with people who never went through checkout.

Charge for the community, not just the content

This add on connects Paid Memberships Pro with BuddyPress or the BuddyBoss Platform so that access to the community depends on the membership level. If your business is the community itself (a professional club, a practice group, a space for students), the product you sell is belonging, and here each level decides which part of that space opens up.

A level can open everything or only part of it

In each level you choose whether it unlocks the whole community or only specific features. If there are several levels, it is enough for the user to have one that grants access to that feature. The features you can control per level are:

  • Creating groups.
  • Viewing an individual group.
  • Viewing the groups page.
  • Joining groups.
  • Sending public messages.
  • Sending private messages.
  • Sending friend requests.
  • Appearing in the member directory.

This allows, for example, a basic level that reads and takes part in groups, and a higher one that also creates its own or writes privately. Anyone who tries to enter something restricted is redirected to the PMPro access restricted page, where you must include the [pmpro_buddypress_restricted] shortcode.

Groups and member types by level

Each level can automatically add its members to certain groups, or only invite them so they decide whether to join. You can also assign BuddyPress member types by level.

Users without a level also need a rule

WordPress always has users without a membership: people registered some other way, old accounts, trial users. In the add on's screen you decide whether those users see nothing, see everything, or only specific features. Set it from the start, because it is the gap through which more people slip in than you would imagine.

Also, most sites should keep registration through the PMPro checkout process. The native registration of BuddyPress or BuddyBoss does not assign any level or take payment, and only makes sense if you let users without a level into some area.

The community profile shows the membership account

The add on adds a "Membership" tab to the profile, visible only to the user themselves, which by default loads the PMPro account page. You can also show the level name on the profile.

Member types and extra fields require code

  • Already solved: restriction by level, access redirection, automatic or invited groups, membership tab and level name on the profile.
  • To cover separately: BuddyPress member types cannot be created from any panel, you must register them with your own code, and the add on only assigns them by level.
  • To cover separately: duplicating PMPro user fields into BuddyPress XProfile fields requires custom code.
  • Requirement: you need Paid Memberships Pro active and, in addition, BuddyPress or the BuddyBoss Platform installed. On its own it does nothing.

Note: BuddyBoss is not the same as BuddyPress. The add on works with both, but the community's features and settings come from the platform you choose, not from this add on.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work without Paid Memberships Pro?

No. It is a PMPro add on and also needs BuddyPress or the BuddyBoss Platform.

Can I charge recurring subscriptions for the community?

Yes, PMPro handles payment with its levels and checkout process; this add on applies community access according to the level.

Can I leave parts of the community open?

Yes. You can unlock only specific features and leave the rest open or closed, both per level and for users without a level.

Is it useful for forums?

You can restrict forum participation within the community, but the forums come from BuddyPress or BuddyBoss, not from this add on.
