About PeepSo Core: Audio & Video

With a member's first video, your hosting changes jobs

A member records a video on their phone and uploads it to the community. For them it was one tap. For your site it starts a task a text forum never had: receiving a large file, storing it and, if you want it to play properly on more devices, converting it.

Opening video uploads turns your community into a small video service, and the important decision is where that work happens. It can happen nowhere, on your server or at Amazon.

PeepSo Core: Audio & Video adds audio and video posts to the PeepSo activity stream. Members can upload files or link content from supported providers, with options to control playback, size and each person's space.

Three methods, and only one active at a time

Only one method can be active at a time, so choose it with your server's details in front of you.

  • No conversion: the starting mode on a new install. It stores the file uncompressed, generates no thumbnails and does not guarantee playback on every device. MP4 is the only officially supported format in this mode.
  • On your server with FFmpeg: it converts with the library installed on your machine and an external cron job that processes the videos.
  • At Amazon: videos go through an S3 bucket and an AWS conversion service, with their own configuration and their own charges.

Controls for playback, space and audio

  • Autoplay in the stream: the video starts when visible, and you can stop it instead of pausing it when it leaves the screen.
  • Limits per file and per person: maximum size in megabytes and allowed space per user, for both video and audio.
  • Output resolution: you choose the final resolution and can prevent smaller videos from being upscaled.
  • Posters and animated GIF: it generates thumbnails and a short hover animation, in GIF, WEBM or both.
  • Audio: files publish immediately without conversion, with cover art through the Last.fm API if you add its key.

Settings that change the member experience

With conversion on, the video does not appear ready right away. The stream first shows a pending conversion notice and the video becomes available once the cron job runs. Explain this in your community so nobody uploads it twice.

The media library option needs a separate review. When enabled, all users can access all files in that library, including other people's.

What conversion demands and how to enable it in stages

It is a PeepSo add-on, so you need the main plugin. To convert on your server, the list is demanding:

  • FFmpeg installed and its path entered in the settings.
  • The PHP functions exec() and shell_exec() not blocked.
  • High upload limits and generous memory for PHP.
  • An external cron job, because the internal WordPress cron does not serve for this task.

On a shared server, video upload and conversion will most likely not work. With Amazon the work leaves your machine, but you need an AWS account, permissions, an S3 bucket and two cron tasks.

Then follow this order:

  1. Check these points with your hosting provider.
  2. Go to PeepSo, Configuration, Audio And Video.
  3. Choose the video method and set the maximum size and space per person.
  4. Set up cron if your method needs it.
  5. Publish a test video and audio and view them on different devices.

PeepSo pieces that go with video

PeepSo is the community base and is required to use this add-on. PeepSo Groups adds spaces with three degrees of privacy. PeepSo User Limits can prevent file uploads by role or until the profile reaches the required percentage. Test on your site whether that also covers audio and video.

When to upload, link or limit a video

Can members share a video without uploading it?

Yes. When creating the post, the member can link a file from an external provider instead of uploading it from their device.

Can I use it on shared hosting?

Video uploads and conversions will very likely fail in that environment. Check the requirements with your provider.

Can I limit how much each member uploads?

Yes. You set a space per user in megabytes. A value of 0 means no limit.

Does the Amazon service cost money?

Yes. Amazon services generate charges on your AWS account.
