Two ways to make a WordPress site bilingual, and you have to pick one
The first is translating what you see: you open the page and substitute the text as you go. The second, which is Polylang's, means creating a genuine separate post for each language and telling WordPress they are paired.
The difference is not technical, it is editorial. With separate posts, the English version can have a different headline, a different example or two fewer paragraphs, because it is content in its own right. If your site publishes and the second language is going to have a life of its own, this is the approach you want. If what you need is the same site copied into another language, the other approach is quicker.
What it translates
- Posts, pages and media, plus categories and tags.
- Custom content types and taxonomies, which is where many plugins fall short.
- Menus and widgets, with their own version per language.
- The block editor and full site editing, without a fight.
The addresses, which decide the search results
Three ways to organise them: subdirectory, subdomain or a different domain per language. Plus the option of translating the permalinks themselves rather than repeating the Spanish in the English version, which is what genuinely helps ranking in the other market.
It sets the language tags telling Google which version belongs to which country, and there a warning is due: those tags are a reciprocal promise. If you declare an English version exists and that page is half done or duplicates the Spanish, Google picks one and discards the other. Half translating is worse than not translating.
What to know before buying
A shop needs a separate add-on. Polylang Pro on its own does not translate products, product categories or the WooCommerce pages: that is done by Polylang for WooCommerce, acquired separately. It is the commonest surprise with this plugin and worth budgeting for from the start.
Machine translation works with DeepL using your own access key, so that service is also paid for separately according to what you translate.
Alternatives in the catalogue
The other two serious systems for translating WordPress start from different ideas, and the choice is better made on approach than on price.
TranslatePress translates what appears on the page, on the site itself, rather than creating separate posts. It is the one that best solves the loose strings plugins and builders insert, which is exactly where Polylang leaves gaps to fill by hand.
WPML is the sector's most established and the one most third-party plugins declare express support for. If your site leans on many extensions, that proven compatibility is worth money in hours not lost.
Polylang's advantage over both remains the same: each language is genuine content, separately editable, with its own structure. For an editorial site with two distinct markets, a translation layer does not replace that.
