About Post Type Builder (PTB)

Unregistering a content type and deleting it are opposite decisions

You create a content type for a property catalog and, months later, the business changes and you want it out of the menu. Two buttons seem to do the same thing and they do not.

In Post Type Builder, unregistering a content type only hides it and it can be restored, while removing it deletes it from the database for good, and you can also delete its posts and terms.

Post Type Builder, or PTB, is a builder for content types, taxonomies and templates that you run from the WordPress admin, without writing code. You define a type, such as "Property," enable what it needs (title, content, excerpt, featured image) and add fields and taxonomies with a drag-and-drop interface.

A visual builder for your own content types

  • Your own content types with title, content, excerpt and featured image options.
  • Taxonomies that work as categories for that type, for example property type, bedrooms or bathrooms.
  • 18 field types: accordion, audio, checkbox, date, image, link button, map, number, progress bar, radio button, rating, relation, select, slider, telephone, text, textarea and video.
  • Templates: a sample archive and a sample single template are generated, and the builder loads your fields and taxonomies so you arrange elements by dragging.
  • Importable samples: properties, movies and restaurants, with the option to import demo posts.
  • Import and export of types, taxonomies and templates, to migrate or back them up.

How content is published and displayed

Posts are entered like blog posts, with the custom fields on the same screen. To display them, you place a PTB shortcode on any page and the content is rendered with your template. You can write it by hand or use the shortcode generator in the Classic Editor.

It extends with optional add-ons:

  • Map View: shows posts with a map field on a map, and each marker links to its post.
  • Relation: connects two content types, for example properties related to a community.
  • Search: builds search and filter forms that query fields and taxonomies.
  • Submissions: lets users submit posts from the front end, with manual or automatic approval.
  • Post Filter: lets the visitor filter an archive by category.

The limits of PTB

You can add fields to types from other plugins, such as WooCommerce products, but PTB templates are only created for the types PTB registers; displaying those fields requires Builder Pro. Builder's map, button and accordion modules also require Builder Pro.

In Submissions you can charge a one-time fee through PayPal or Stripe, but not recurring subscriptions. Multilingual content needs a third-party plugin, such as WPML or Polylang.

Getting it running

It works with any standard WordPress theme; Builder Pro is only needed if you want per-category or per-post templates, or its modules. To start:

  1. Install and activate the plugin with the WordPress installer.
  2. Create a content type and tick the options it needs.
  3. Add the taxonomies and custom fields.
  4. Design the archive and single templates with the builder.
  5. Write the posts and place the shortcode on a page.

Options for structuring your own content

To add custom fields with a different approach, there is Advanced Custom Fields PRO. If you prefer a field builder from the Meta Box family, look at Meta Box Builder. There is also GeoDirectory Custom Post Types.

Answers about Post Type Builder

What happens to my data if I remove a content type?

If you unregister it, it is hidden and stays in the database. If you remove it, it is deleted and cannot be recovered. You can also choose whether its posts and terms are deleted.

Do I need to know how to code?

No. Types, taxonomies and templates are built from the admin.

Can I run the site in several languages?

Types and labels support several languages, but translated content requires a third-party plugin, such as WPML or Polylang.

Can I move my types to another site?

Yes. Types, taxonomies and templates can be imported and exported.
