About Rhye AJAX Portfolio WordPress Theme
Without reloads, every script you add becomes your job
You install a chat, a booking button or an external counter, you test it on the front page and it works. You open a project from the menu and it is gone, or it does not respond. The page has not been loaded again, so that script has not started again.
Rhye is a portfolio theme for designers, photographers, creative agencies and production studios that changes pages through AJAX transitions, with no full reload. That is where its effect comes from, and that is where its cost comes from: scripts added outside the theme have to be re-initialised by hand on every transition.
So the useful question before choosing it is how many external pieces your site will carry. With images, text and a Contact Form 7 form, the theme is on home ground. With several third-party services, set aside time to re-initialise them or take those pages out of the transitions.
Sliders, grids and motion in Rhye
- 27 custom Elementor widgets, split across two panel sections: static and dynamic.
- WebGL and GSAP 3 effects: transitions, fullscreen sliders, parallax and text reveal.
- A demo with nine sliders in fullscreen, halfscreen and circle cover layouts, plus irregular, 2-column and 3-column grids.
- Fullscreen overlay menu with unlimited submenus, switchable with a classic menu.
What to adjust so the AJAX transitions work
- Permalinks: any structure except Plain.
- GA Google Analytics plugin: the tracking method has to be gtag.js, or AJAX page views are not counted.
- Exclusions: each page can be taken out of the transitions from Elementor, under Page Transition, and each link through a jQuery selector.
- Autoptimize: it works for CSS and JavaScript, but its HTML minifier can cause problems with the transitions. WP Super Cache does work with them.
Rhye is not a shop theme, and other limits of its AJAX
It is not compatible with WooCommerce. It has no layouts or styling for shop pages. If you use it anyway, a single toggle excludes those pages from the transitions, but the look of the shop is left to you.
The theme AJAX has limited support for certain Elementor functions, so it is worth testing each external widget through real navigation, not only on a freshly opened page.
Switching language reloads the page. It works with WPML, Polylang and TranslatePress, but without an AJAX transition on that jump.
WPForms has experimental compatibility. Contact Form 7 is the recommended form. And smooth scrolling can stop when the pointer is over an iframe, such as a YouTube video; it is turned off in Theme Options.
Elementor, Kirki and Rhye Core: what you need and how to start
You need Elementor 3.25.0 or later, the Rhye Core plugin, which provides the widgets, and Kirki, which extends the Customizer. Elementor asks for a memory limit of 256 MB, with 512 MB recommended.
- Install the theme on a clean WordPress site and follow the wizard.
- Import the demo. If it stops, raise the PHP limits and run it again: it resumes at the step where it stopped.
- Change the permalinks and replace the sample content with your projects.
- Test each external script by moving between pages and exclude whatever does not respond.
Other routes to your portfolio in the catalogue
If your work needs explaining more than impressing, Agencium brings case study sections and several agency front pages. If you are also going to sell, Uncode is aimed at designers and studios, with its own builder based on WPBakery.
And if you already have a theme you like and only the portfolio is missing, Visual Portfolio Pro adds six formats, filtering and a lightbox.
Questions about Rhye, AJAX and Elementor
Can projects be ordered by hand?
Yes, with the Intuitive Custom Post Order plugin. Projects appear in the dynamic widgets on their own, and the /portfolio/ base address can be changed with another plugin.
Which cache plugin fits the transitions?
The recommended cache for this theme is WP Super Cache, which works with the transitions. With any other, test the navigation before publishing.
Does it support horizontal scrolling sections?
Yes, through the free Horizontal Scroll for Elementor plugin, also with AJAX transitions.
