About Tooltips for WpForms
Your form's help ends where you stopped writing it
A field like "Contract reference" or "Cycle code" raises doubts, and people with doubts may close the tab instead of writing to you. You add a hint to two fields, the form grows, and the rest are left with nothing.
A tooltip only appears next to labels that have a text defined, so your form's real help depends on how many fields you got around to completing.
Tooltips for WPForms is an add-on for Styler for WPForms that adds tooltips to WPForms field labels. It automatically detects supported labels and shows the help icon only on those that have a tooltip defined. You can choose the icon, its size, the space from the label, the box theme, its width, the animation and the direction it opens.
What this add-on controls
- Automatic detection: it finds the supported field labels.
- Conditional icon: it is added only to labels with a tooltip defined.
- Icon choice: a collection of tooltip icons, with adjustable size.
- Spacing: space between the field label and the icon.
- Themes: one of the premade themes or your own with the built-in controls.
- Text width: the tooltip text container has a configurable width.
- Animation: you choose the type of animation it appears with.
- Position: the tooltip aligns to the left, right, top or bottom of the icon.
- Responsive with preview: it is fully responsive and shows changes live.
Reviewing a hint on an application form
Suppose an application form has ten fields, four of which usually raise questions. One way to use it is to define a tooltip only on those four and leave the others without, since the icon does not appear where there is no text. It is your own combination, so test it with someone who does not know the form before publishing.
- Note which fields prompt questions in your support inbox or emails.
- Write a short explanation for each one.
- Choose an icon and a theme that stand out from the rest of the page.
- Open the form on a phone and check that the box reads in full.
What it needs and what falls outside
- It is an add-on for Styler for WPForms, so it needs that plugin as well as WPForms.
- It acts on field labels: the help is shown next to the label.
- The icon appears only where a tooltip is defined, so fields without text do not show it.
How to add your first tooltips
First you need WPForms and Styler for WPForms active on the site. After that, the flow is short.
- Install and activate the add-on alongside Styler for WPForms.
- Decide which fields need an explanation and define the tooltip for each.
- Choose the icon, its size and the spacing from the label.
- Select a premade theme or create your own with the built-in controls.
- Adjust width, animation and position, and check the preview before publishing.
Alternatives for explaining fields
The simplest option is to write the help as a visible description under the field, with no add-on: nothing is hidden, though it takes more space. For another builder in the catalog there is Gravity Forms Tooltips, which is a different product for Gravity Forms.
