About UsersWP - Private Messaging
A WordPress community often stalls when members have no way to talk to each other without leaving the site: they swap emails, jump to WhatsApp or social networks, and the conversation (and the people) leave your website. UsersWP - Private Messaging adds a private chat between users inside your own site, with a look inspired by Facebook Messenger.
A one-to-one chat that lives where your community already is
A logged-in user clicks the "Message" button that appears in the user directory, on another member's profile or in the messaging sidebar. A popup window opens where they type and send. On their profile, a "Messages" tab shows the list of recent conversations.
It is a one-to-one chat. And only registered users can write, so it does not work for an anonymous visitor to send you an inquiry.
How different types of community use it
If you are building a directory or a member network
Members usually want to contact each other without publishing their email. The button in the directory and on the profile solves exactly that.
If you are worried about spam or trolls
You have several moderation tools:
- User blacklist: stops specific users from using the chat.
- Word filter: you restrict the terms you do not want to see in conversations.
- Character limit: you set the maximum length of each message.
- Blocking between users: any member can block someone who bothers them.
If your members value their privacy
From their account, in the messaging section, each user decides who can write to them: everybody, nobody, friends or followers. Friends and followers depend on your site having those relationships set up, so check in the demo how it behaves in your case.
If you want people to come back to the conversation
The plugin can send email alerts for unread messages, at the interval you choose. This prevents a message from going unanswered for days because the recipient did not visit the site.
It needs UsersWP as its base
It does not work on its own: it is an add-on for the main UsersWP plugin. If you already use another user system, you would have to replace it or run two side by side. It is also not live support for customers or a group chat, and you should not expect real-time notifications beyond what is described: messages, a conversations tab and email alerts.

You can customize the color of each element of the chat window so it matches your theme. The design is responsive, so it works on mobile, and it is fully translatable, which is useful if your community does not speak English.

No. Only logged-in users send messages to other users.
Can I create group chats?
No, the chat is one-to-one.
Can a member prevent others from writing to them?
Yes. From their account they choose whether they receive messages from everybody, nobody, friends or followers, and they can also block anyone who bothers them.
Can I change the chat colors?
Yes, the color of each element of the message box can be customized.
