About WooCommerce ePay.bg Payment Gateway
When the Bulgarian customer can't find their way to pay
Setting up a store for Bulgaria with the gateway you already use in other markets often ends in abandoned carts right at the last step: the buyer reaches payment, doesn't see the method they're used to, and leaves.
This plugin connects WooCommerce with ePay.bg so orders can be paid with a debit card carrying the BORICA logo, Visa and Mastercard credit cards, or an ePay.bg micro account. The problem is rarely a missing gateway, but a missing one that your customer recognises and trusts.
Three stores that fit ePay.bg Payment Gateway
The store based in Bulgaria
If your customers are Bulgarian and you charge in leva, ePay.bg gives you a local payment method for your WooCommerce orders. The customer sees a familiar method and pays in an environment they already know.
The foreign store starting to sell there
If you sell from another country to Bulgarian buyers, you need an ePay.bg account (or to open one), because the plugin works with your API credentials.
The store that already has an ePay.bg account
If you already collect payments through ePay.bg, you install the plugin, enter your API credentials and the method appears as a payment option in WooCommerce. The plugin's documentation covers the settings.
What happens between the pay button and the thank-you page
The plugin uses a redirect payment. The journey goes like this:
- The customer chooses ePay.bg at checkout and confirms the order.
- They are sent to ePay.bg's secure servers, where they enter their card details or use their micro account.
- Once payment is finished, they return to your store.
This has a practical consequence: card details are entered in the ePay.bg environment and not in your own form. On the other hand, the customer briefly leaves your design, so it's wise to test the full journey with a test order before going live.
Questions before enabling ePay.bg
Which payment methods can the customer use? Debit cards with the BORICA logo, Visa and Mastercard credit cards, and ePay.bg micro accounts.
Do I need an ePay.bg account? Yes. The plugin is configured with your ePay.bg API credentials.
Is payment made inside my site? No. The customer is redirected to ePay.bg's servers and then returns to the store.
Does it work with other WooCommerce plugins? It passes the compatibility checks with standard WooCommerce flows and extensions. If you use a heavily customised checkout, try it first with a real order.
It only charges in Bulgarian leva (BGN)
ePay.bg accepts payments in Bulgarian lev, and that shapes your catalogue: if you need to charge in other currencies, this plugin doesn't cover them and you'll have to combine it with another gateway. Nor does it replace an international gateway: it is an option designed for the Bulgarian audience, and it works as a payment method added to your WooCommerce store, not as a store on its own.
