About WooCommerce UPS Shipping Method

Charging shipping by guesswork is the silliest way to lose margin

You set a flat shipping rate, and half your orders cost more than you charged while the other half scare the customer off for being too expensive. Anyone selling physical goods with UPS usually finds out late, when the carrier invoice doesn't match what came in through the store.

WooCommerce UPS Shipping Method connects the store to the UPS API and shows the real price at checkout based on what's in the cart and the delivery address. You charge what UPS quotes, no more and no less.

Services, packing and adjustments: what you can control (and what falls outside)

It works for domestic and international parcels. You choose which UPS services to offer, rename them and decide the order in which customers see them. Domestic ones include Next Day Air, 2nd Day Air, 3 Day Select, Ground, Simple Rate and several SurePost options. International ones include Worldwide Express, Express Plus, Expedited, Saver and Standard.

  • Negotiated rates: if your UPS account has agreed, approved pricing, the plugin can show it instead of the published rate.
  • Packing: you can ship each item separately, use standard UPS packaging or define your own boxes with weight and dimensions. The last option is the recommended one for accurate quotes.
  • Price adjustment per service: raise or lower each service to cover handling or packing materials.
  • Offer Rates: show all available services or only the cheapest rate, depending on whether you want the customer to choose or the system to decide.
  • Address validation: optional; with it, checkout can only be completed with a UPS-validated address, which helps avoid failed deliveries and address correction fees. It requires enabling the Address Validation service in your UPS app.

What it doesn't do

It doesn't handle freight and the limit is 150 lb per package. It doesn't generate labels or tracking either: it only calculates and displays rates, so you'll need another tool to print labels or you can buy them directly from UPS. And every non-virtual product must have a weight (and dimensions if you use boxes), because without that data the quote won't be reliable.

Questions from people who sell with UPS

Do I need a UPS account?

Yes. The plugin connects to your account through the UPS REST API, so you need an active account and API credentials.

Does it work for selling abroad?

Yes, it calculates international quotes. Rates come back in the currency of the country where the API was registered, so your store currency must match it.

Does it work with shipping zones?

Yes. You add the method to a WooCommerce zone and configure services, packing and adjustments for that zone, for example to separate domestic and international destinations.

Which units does it use?

It works mainly with inches and pounds, and converts other units automatically.

Shipping zones and product data first, then the method

Order matters. Create your WooCommerce shipping zones first, because the method is added inside one of them. Check that every physical product has a weight and, if you'll use boxes, dimensions. Also make sure your server has SimpleXML and that your UPS account has negotiated rates active, if you plan to use them.

Then place test orders with different carts (a single item, several, a distant destination) and compare what checkout shows with what UPS would quote. If the figures drift, check the defined weights and boxes first.
