About Wordfence Security Premium

A firewall is worth the date of its rules

When a vulnerability is published in a popular plugin, the notice is read at the same time by those who defend and those who attack. From that day on, the question that matters is not whether you have a firewall, but whether your firewall already knows about that flaw.

The figure is specific: firewall rules and malware signatures arrive in real time with Premium, and the free version receives them 30 days late. What separates one option from the other is not the filter, it is how long it takes to learn about a new attack.

That is why the decision is not made by comparing feature lists, but by knowing how long your site can sit with a vulnerable plugin left un-updated. If you look after sites nobody touches for weeks, that month is the gap attackers walk through.

The pieces of Wordfence Premium

  • Web application firewall that blocks malicious traffic, with real-time rules and signatures through the Threat Defense Feed.
  • Real-time IP blocklist that blocks requests from the most malicious addresses.
  • Malware scanner for core, themes and plugins: malware, bad URLs, backdoors and changed files.
  • Login security: two-factor authentication with any TOTP app, passkeys, CAPTCHA, XML-RPC options and blocking of administrators with leaked passwords.
  • Country blocking, more frequent scans and spam checks.
  • Audit log of sensitive areas, stored off-site through Wordfence Central.
  • Live traffic, rate limiting of aggressive crawlers and rules by IP range, host, user agent or referrer.

Why it works inside WordPress, and what that means

Wordfence is an endpoint firewall: it runs inside WordPress, not in a cloud service in front of your server. The advantage is specific: it knows whether whoever makes the request is signed in, something an external filter cannot see, and it does not need to decrypt your traffic somewhere else.

The trade-off is that every request, malicious ones included, reaches your server and consumes its resources before being blocked. Against a volume attack, the kind that tries to take the site down by sheer number of requests, you need something in front, at the network level.

What Wordfence does not cover

It does not make backups. Its scanner can repair and delete files, so it is worth reviewing each result and making a backup first.

It does not work in isolation from Wordfence. Scans query its servers and return an error when they cannot be reached.

It also looks up IP locations through the Wordfence API by default, which can be turned off.

Getting Wordfence running: requirements and first steps

WordPress 4.7 or later and PHP 7.0 or later.

  1. Install and activate the plugin.
  2. Turn on two-factor authentication for every administrator account.
  3. Run a full scan and review each warning before repairing or deleting anything, with a backup in place.
  4. If you look after several sites, connect them to Wordfence Central, free for unlimited sites, with alerts by email, SMS or Slack.

Other security plugins in the catalogue

With the same all-in-one approach, Security Ninja PRO combines a cloud firewall, login protection, a scanner and an activity log, and WP Cerber Security Pro inspects traffic and allows country rules.

For scanning and cleaning, Security by CleanTalk can cure or quarantine infected items. And with many sites on MainWP, MainWP Wordfence Extension manages Wordfence from a single dashboard.

Questions about Wordfence Premium

What changes between free Wordfence and Premium?

Real-time rules and signatures, which arrive 30 days late in the free version, the real-time IP blocklist, country blocking, more frequent scans and spam checks.

Does it protect against a denial of service attack?

Not against a volume one. It rate limits aggressive crawlers, but it runs on your server, so the traffic still reaches it.

Does it work without a connection to Wordfence servers?

Not entirely. The rules feed and the scans depend on them.

What kinds of two-factor authentication does it support?

Any TOTP-based authenticator app, plus passkeys using fingerprint, facial recognition, a device password or a PIN.
